Make a VERY simple DAC?

Does anyone have any information on how to either make or purchase an extremely simple DAC?

The whole "starving student" thing really applies to me, so it will have to be pretty cheap too.

For DIY, there's always Bantham and Alien DACs
I've only made an Alien personally, but it should be around $50-$60 cased if you get a kit from glassjar and the other hardware from mouser/digikey

There's also the GrubDAC. Looks very easy to build, but I don't like working with small cases/PCB.

That Headphonia USB DAC looks very nice... didn't know they upgraded to the WM8740/AD8656. A great combo!

which was based on all info from
BantamCableDAC

The Grub owes a lot the Bantam.

I'm curious how big that lump is.

Here's a direct link. Headphonia.com - USB DAC Cable with Mini Plug 33'' (100cm)

The "electronics Lump" looks like its about the same size as a full size USB connector and twice as long.. pretty small all things considered..

Depending on how well it's implemented, it's possible that it could sound amazingly good for the price..

My trigger finger is getting itchy..
