Amps that are as good as Singlepower ($2000-$5000) - Page 3

MPX3 owner here, of the amps I have listened too the Supra and Balancing Act prototype sounded as good or better. However was not able to do a side by side so take my comments in stride. Need to listen to the ZDT and WA 5 LE.

I love my Manley but as I haven't heard any Singlepower amps I can't give you a comparative opinion.

If you don't have to spend it all on one amp, why not begin trying some of the Chinese amps (besides DV of course) I see on ebay? There's a lot of them that cost hundreds, not thousands of dollars.

Jon, take a look at Eddie Current and Woo. I assume you got a chance to hear Shelly's WA5 yesterday?

Skylab said in the Darkvoice 337 thread that he prefers it to the Singlepower he owned.
Maybe he'll chime in.

The Darkvoice 337 is certainly competitive with the SP Extreme, with the right tubes.

I heard them both within a few minutes of each other. The WA amp was smooth and refined. The ZDT was detailed, more neutral and faster, but not altogether lacking in character. The WA5 reminded me of my MPX3 Slam SE, but it was smoother.

I easily preferred the ZDT, but that is highly personal. It IS a different sound than the MPX3, but very engaging. The only tube to fiddle with is the driver, but you could perhaps add a bit more character to the sonics by using a US-made 1950s 5751 or even a 12AY7 which is quite dark with a marvelous tone for acoustic music. I don't know
