How do you feel about autotuning?

Thread Starter
I've seen pretty clear cut responses by some people in various discussions. Ranging from "I don't care as long as the music is dance worthy" to people losing lots of respect for artist they once favored.

How does autotuning affect your opinion of an artist? do you find that music without tuning sounds better? Or do you feel autotuning is just another tool for artist like a guitar or drums?

Personally I don't care, if it's undetectable by me then all the power to them but usually if it's used extensively to cover up bad vocals it's quite apparent in the recording and I will stop listening.

i think it's crap.

(unless it's used for Carl Sagan or the news)

I brought this up a little while ago but with a negative spin, because it's a gimmick that's been driven into the ground by countless t-pain wannabes.

It's a bit like alcohol, it can be good in reasonable doses, but too much makes you sound like an idiot.

And Katie Couric is an Autotune legend.

don't like it.

If the purpose of autotuning is to override vocal flaws, then no, it is not a "tool" like a drum or a guitar or a synthesiser; it is merely a "patch".

A "tool" is something that an artist can use creatively.

Agreed, FalconP.

That being said, Autotune can, of course, be used as a tool, but the people who do so are not the ones who use it seamlessly.

For autotune to function as a tool, you need to be way off pitch. Unless you're far enough off the note, you can't trigger any of the audible interesting effects. Singers can train themselves to do this, or they can just suck. The result is similar, either way.

As a musician, I think Autotune is a fantastic patch, and a fantastic tool. If you treat it like a pedal, it's wonderful. If you treat it like EQ, it gets a little old.

I agree completely with FalconP. If someone is a professional singer / musician, they should have developed a strong sense of intonation along the way. It's their job to sing in tune, not to sing sort of in tune and then fix it with technology.

I'm pretty sure you mean Stephen Hawking.

I think it depends on how it's used. For achieving a certain sound, it's fine, but not to correct vocals that are supposed to sound on-key. I would liken it to guitar distortion.

Now, I would say that I often don't like the sound they're going for, but that's beside the point.

Philosophically, I have no issues with autotune, whether it be used as a patch or simply an effect. However, I could do without the tiny bit of puke that inevitably finds its way up my esophagus into my mouth whenever I hear it.

X2 on autotuning the news.

I don't mind it to correct minor flaws or if it's used creatively. But if you use Autotune to make someone who merely dances well into a "star" or use it as a one-trick pony, then it's lame.

Though it's rare for me to listen to Autotuned music in the first place. I haven't heard a speck of it on Knud Vad's 18 disc box set of Bach's organ works. Doesn't seem present on the Village Green Preservation Society disc that, somehow, cannot be removed from my car's CD player. Not that I mind.
