I can't directly answer, but I can say that I have a V-DAC with some orthos that are quite detailed and revealing and a fairly revealing amp - the difference between usb and optical input was clear; the usb gave a hard edge to the treble that was not nice - less revealing headphones didn't show this difference. With optical I have no reservation about it.

THe HE-5 really is that good. Testament to the fact that orthos can be all that they are made out to be.

An excellent DAC for the money and very smooth sounding.

As a Moderator, I need to point out that a MOT is not allowed to post in a non-sponsored thread about his own products,
unless someone directly poses a question to that MOT. Then, they can respond and provide information.
Some pruning done to correct and get back on topic.

Otherwise it is not fair to the other MOT's.

Except for asking us to get back on topic, the rest of my posts were made by me, as a member who gets joy from these cans
with big magnets in them.

I am mostly using the HE-5 in my bedroom rig (PS Audio DAC/WA6, HEV70 and EF5), whereas before I was alternating between the HD600 and HF-2 in there the most. The HE-5 took away much of the enjoyment that I used to get from many of my other dynamics, but I still sometimes break out the HE60 for a change of pace (with eXStatA amp coming soon for those). I also grab my custom IEM or LA7000 if I need a closed phone to not disturb my wife in the bedroom.

So, I don't really need the HE-5's cable to be balanced right now, since my balanced amps are all in my main rig in the basement (Apogee mini-DAC/ZDT, SAC, Sq Wave and WES amps). I moved the HD800, K1000 and the other electrostatics back down to my main rig in the basement again; but somehow I'm still spending more time listening in my bedroom rig, rather than running down to the basement every time I want to listen. It reinforces to me that while I have killer gear in my basement rig that I love dearly, I could live without that stuff if I had to sell it to pay the bills, as long as I had these.

Let's hope that doesn't happen

I picked up my HE-5's at the post office today, no sibilance to speak of if it's not in the recordings.

Larry and Sachu: would you guys mind expanding on your comments and preferences of HE-5 vs the SR-007mk1's?
I am leaning towards buying the Stax but this thread has piked my interest and if the sound difference is not that significant, I would consider the HE-5 instead.

They are two different sounding headphones. As noted before orthos just sound different. it is not for everyone. However if you do like the sound signature, then i's be willing to bet that you wold reach for the HE-5 more than the SR-007mk1.
Now, I never got the chance to do a side by side comparo with the SR-007mk1 and HE-5.

I did get to listen to it alongside my second favorite stat, the ESP950 with probably the best stat amp for the Koss, the hybrid eXStatA. I was in euphoria about just having completed building the eXStatA and enjoying the ESP950 with it (match made in heaven kinda thing). I switched over to the HE-5 on the EHHA and it left me with my jaw open. The HE-5+ EHHA combo soundly beat the stat rig in nearly all areas.

A week later with more detailed comparisions done i became confident enough to let my entire stat rig go which i had not planned to at all. But the HE-5 was good enough to justify it. I don't plan on going back to stats ever. That's about the best compliment i can give the HE-5.

OF course, YMMV.

Thank you Sachu. I noticed you sold all your stats. I thought you had some issues with the HE5 too, regarding the inability to tweak them. Didn't you sell yours?

I did..I had the same problem that tim is having with his.
However if his is as different as skylab and Tim say they are compared to Skylab's pair then I'd be willing to give it another go.
I am in conversation with Fang about this.

I'm having sibilance problems too and am talking to Fang about trying out the EF-5 to see if it magically fixes the problem.

I can smell a lot of hype in this thread (people ditching electrostatic systems just for this, etc...). I have seen this thing been done before, and it doesn't amuse me this HE-5 headphones will just be another competent headphone which some will love others won't find so special.

For example this past days I had been listening to my SR-202 a lot and when I swapped to the Grados I found them too sibilant, even annoying. However I don't know what happened with me yesterday that I put the grados back on and they sounded like heaven!

This experience can happen with any headphone/IEM out there.

True about the hype, lots of FotMs on here. However, one thing is for certain -- they fall into the correct price range for their performance.
