I'm not sure when I will get around to a formal review (I bought the HE-5 purely for my own enjoyment), but there is no doubt that this is a very, very fine, upper-tier headphone!

Any word yet on how well they play with different amps, Rob? At RMAF I was using a powerful tube amp that still couldn't drive them well - the only thing they really sounded good out of was Fang's EF-1. Was wondering if he might have made any adjustments to them since then to make them play nice with other amps and thought your experiences here would be telling.

Sounds *Terrific* with the GD Audio Phoenix. Also sounded remarkably good with the little JSoundLab amp. Haven't tried any others yet - most of my other amps aren't really designed to work with low impedance loads like the HE-5...

A nice powerful tube affair the WA6SE (full mods) didn't fare as well as the Dynalo or the Headcode. Solid-state oomph is handy for these.

Yup, Hybrid still means the solid of solid-state is still in the chain.

Yep...

Need to completely transform my EHHA to be able to push 18 watts into 4 ohms. Have all the bits necessary to do that.

True so, I think. Such is very often the case for current-hungry, low impedance cans.

I'm not quite sure if they use the same technology, but can anyone compare these to the Fostex T50RP (newest version), which at least one person has described as "the most balanced, detailed and natural sounding headphones out there at any price"?

Not many people will like this cause of its accuracy and balanced sound it is devoid of coloration. I have had some folks think it sounded subdued compared to my other orthos, that it wasn't peppy .

I will soon be able to compare a souped up woody version of the T50RPs in a couple of weeks or so. Probably then I can answer your question better.

edit: the size of the T50 driver being about 2/3 the size of the HE-5 is a limiting factor. But the T50 does reputably have the edge with a more advanced driver.

I didn't think the T50RP was particularly accurate or devoid of coloration. If you want really flat, try listening to some SR-X Mk3s or Pros sometime.

You should try some Lambda Sigs sometime (or not). Insta-bleed for your ears.
