HE-5..initial musings - Page 40

Right now with only about 4 hrs of burn-in, they already sound great. I'm really glad I sold my Edition 9 to get these. Actually I sold the ED9 with the intention of ordering the T1 but all the talk here convinced me to try the HE-5. I'm glad I checked out this thread because already I like these orthos way better than the ED9. I'm not ready to sell my HD800 though because it's very good in a different way. The huge open soundstage of the HD800 makes music such as big classical works (or any other music that can take advantage of it openess) sound absolutely incredible. The HE-5 seduces me with its rich midrange with music from my favorite female vocalists. I love both of these cans for different reasons.

I am hearing more as is stated a lot around here- buzz from guitar amps, singers moving in their chairs, breath intake, etc. This can good and bad obviously but more good to my ear. Instruments are quite distinct from one another on the good recordings. Brass instruments are in particular very real sounding (in a classical number I listened to).
Do you mean that there is more bass in quantity to the sr325i's? I find that the Grados have problems playing bass notes.. It's a muddy bump I hear from them
Well, sounding "real" is promising.. That would indicate that pitches and tone are somewhat correct.

The bass on the HE-5 is tight and very extended. This is coming from someone that just sold his Edition 9 a week ago. The Edition 9 is known for its bass. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with the bass from the HE-5.

Curiosity almost got to me also concerning these Chinese headphones, but then I read some impressions on the Beyer T1 and decided to wait for it instead. Seems like an impressive new design.

Edition 9 is known for the worst bass on this planet. I'd rather listen to Porta Pros...
If you're saying that the bass of the HE-5 is anything close to ED9s, I will seriously consider about canceling my order immediately.

Got my pair today and love 'em so far although the cable is a PoS and for once I see a reason to recable headphones. The Elekit TU-882 drives them just fine -- 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock on the medium and low impedance settings, respectively.

As far as bass, they have less bass than the PRO 900 overall (more balanced in that respect) but more detail, especially in complex passages. I don't find them to extend as well though, the HE-5 seem good down to about 30hz and nonexistent at 20hz whereas the PRO 900 went down to 15 and below.

I got mine today. I've burned them in for about 10 minutes, and I was going to keep quiet for longer but felt the need to encourage electropop to give the HE-5's a shot (30 day return policy). The bass is not overwhelming at all, even in its current fledgling state... I feel like there's been about equal talk/speculation about the HE-5's midrange and its bass, since these are two of its very strong traits, but IMO the HE-5's mid-range is its stronger suit.

Amping Note: Using CKKIII, SR225's 10:00 ~= HE-5's 12:00 I do not think it is underpowered, although I wish I had upper-end amp experience to qualify this. I am enjoying the sound very much.

I'll keep my order and evaluate for myself. Thanks

Everyone who has gotten theirs: Did the tracking say something once they were in the US? Mine is still stuck on the "despatch" phase.

Yes, USPS showed it first and then EMS's tracking updated about a day later. Maybe check USPS instead of EMS?

Yeah I would cancel my order if I were you. The HE-5 bass won't satisfy you.

Nooooo~~! But seriously though. People listen to different things in music differently. Some seek out sound characteristics, some listen to the music with melodies. The ED9 can't play melodies, especially in the bass-section. It's monotonic head-ache bass, to my ears/brains at least. Many say that the HE-5s are very musical in the sense I see musicality.

My point is that I can't really trust anyone's words here. They have a 30 day money back guarantee, so I'll just let them come and evaluate for myself

Orhtodynamic bass has rhythm and melody - if you don't want to spend as much on the HE5 pick up a second hand yamaha and satisfy your curiosity first. Or use the 30 day return policy. Bottom line is you may not like it but I suspect you will. I dislike the ED9 more than you can know..dB

I'm again very relieved after reading your comment, dBel84. Thank you. I suspect that I'll like the headphones at least more than my current AD2000s. The HE-5s seem to be liked by both the orthoheads and everyone else, I guess, so they can't be too bad
To be honest, I'd rather leave the bass out of the picture than have it ruin my music sessions.
If you like the HE-5 but dislike the ED9 more than almost anything, I really think I'm on the right track.
Will definitely post impressions from myself once I get them.

Thanks again

I'm in the same boat you are. Still stuck in the "dispatch" phase, whatever that is. I'm in southern California so I figured I'd probably one of the first to actually get them. Shows what I know.
