HE-5..initial musings - Page 4

Gentlemenses. Rock and funk tunage through non-tubed amp setups. Anyone done this yet? I'm itching to click the Buy button, but low end is a major problem for most non-closed cans I've heard.

I don't think anyone would find there to be a lack of bass with these. I don't.

I hear you, Skylab, but I've learned to be skeptical of people's bass claims in Head-Fi forum posts. Have had too many "adequate bass" cans that sounded like someone chopped off everything from 150 down.

Yeah, I understand you completely! I often feel the same way. However, I can assure you that in my case, sufficient bass quantity is always a concern of mine - some head-fiers actually think I like too much bass

That's good to hear, considering that most people's "too much" is my "enough". These being planars, though (I am assuming here)...I just wonder how much slam they'll have. And I hate to drop $600 on another HD650-ish sounding headphone.

I cannot promise you will like them - heck, I don't even think mine are fully broken in, but what I hear is VERY good sound for the money.

I personally prefer them to the Senn HD800 (talk about )

Ha! My brother! I think Senn's best headphone is the HD25-1-II, so I probably don't need to respond further.

With the EF1 amp at RMAF the HE-5 bass was Slammin' and hits hard and fast, with good definition. They were also very transparent and uncolored, detailed and fast. I don't know if the amp was modded, but it had great synergy.

My only complaint with my old EF1 amp was the volume control wasn't good with IEM, which I understand is now improved, and that it had a smaller soundstage than the Woo WA6 or ALO Amphora (but those cost me 3x as much). So, a person could get a killer $1,000 rig with the EF1/HE-5 combined with an inexpensive DAC like Super Pro DAC707.

ill compare HE-5 to LA7000s , HD800 , dt880 600s when i get around to it all balanced besides the he-5s =/

^ that sounds interesting.

The HE-5's are TERRIFIC on the Audio-GD Phoenix, BTW, even unbalanced. I mean slap-your-mama good. Color me very, VERY impressed.

FWIW, I broke mine in for 5 straight days while I was traveling, so I have about 120-ish hours break in on them. But they don;t sound a lot different than they did after 24 hours break in.

Skylab, have you tried them with the 337?
No, and I hadn't planned on it - my 337 doesn't generally like ultra-low impedance headphones like the HE-5.
I have less than 24 hours on mine, but I too am very impressed. They are definitely in the same league as the 800's, bit of a different flavor, imo. Not sure yet which one I prefer.
