HE-5..initial musings - Page 18

That's the main love aspect I share with the HD800. It hits the beat of notes and inflects the pitch curve very well. You have beginning sharpness, the swell of the middle and the quaver and decay at the end. You can cross styles of Perlman to Heifetz and listen to the same Music composition and contrast playing styles from bowing speed and pressure and note intensity with duration and understand the interpretation or perception of each artist.

Drum head hit's and the pitch of Snare to Tom and back and forth.

It's note only speed but clarity of tone with a lack of artificial or synthetic quality that stems from perceived balance.

Many of the same attributes will be associated with the HE-5 also. I just need mine back so I can dive in (need a re-breather) and snorkel a bit to find more sunken Treasure.

As he has said plenty of times, he's waiting for a new, more powerful amplifier and balanced cables to give full impressions.

What I haven't received an answer for, concerns the pitch-accuracy. It doesn't have to be the latest in transparency or dynamics either if I can only hear notes.
I too will give full impressions after getting the balanced cable to use with the Phoenix. But I tried them yesterday with my repaired/restored Extreme, and man they sounded great. REALLY great. So all of the amps I have used the HE-5 with that have good power delivery, the Phoenix and the CSP-2 as well as the modded Extreme, all did really well with the HE-5.

I think the HE-5 has fantastic pitch accuracy. I hear no issues there with it at all. It's excellent in this regard.

talking about headphones personality

HD-800 is a big man with large shoulders but doesnt have feelings too
neutral

Ultrsasone 8 a 30-35 yer old businessman outside and rastafa inside

Grado GS-1000 is a shy tall lady and she lets even the wind blow
through and when she tries to dance she appears a little bit stiff

HE-5 is a husband in he’s comfortable house and is smoking a pipe and
reads Rider Digest and maybe two children playing around him with some
toys ,it’s a nice middle age man.

Now that sounds good

What's your source and amplifier you listen to HD800s with? They really seem to have that chameleon aspect to them.. I can't say I found any of these qualities when listening through Lehman Black Cube Linear fed with Cambridge Audio Dacmagic. There was nothing natural in the sound...
Damn, this trip might come out more expensive than I initially thought it would

Even more tempting.. I seriously need to start planning an investment in a proper amplifier.

Thank you for the information guys!

going through my real reference recordings OPUS Sweden and Harmonia Mundia i could not resist to think is the HE-5 probably the HOLY GRAIL of headphones. There were really magical moments when listening today, you should hear the actual performance and atmosphere of the event itself and time when it was made. I suppose to hear with HE-5 the largest distance between front and back row than from any other phone and somehow the HE-5 even grow with time . I dont know why they grow maybe they are burning in. These phones appear colored but i suppose they are simply so close to the original performance that they feel colored .Stax 02 has liquidity wich is related to the construction and is one of its signatures .He-5 does not own any signature ,if that is not neutrality what is.In real life music has always colors and a phone that reproduces it appears also colored and He-5 does exactly this its a Statement

True; apart from that large peak in 4kHz region, HE-5 are quite neutral.

All the stuff in the signature. Balanced is the best way to approach the HD800!.

I like the control and even temper of Solid-State with the HD800, in particular at the extremes and the lack of "schmaltz" that many (not all) tube amps effect. Now, I love the way the Big Woo's power the HD800, with flesh and tonality...they do run out of edge in the very bottom frequency extreme. The HD800's are 'Big Shouldered" and a Symphony appreciates that.

hmmm how about the the Moth SI2A3/45? Yummmmy! Yummmmy!

Rob (Skylab) loves the creamy nature of tubular affairs and loves the roasty, toasty amber burn that tubes, and the interaction of the HE-5 give you. It's NOT wrong! We all have to pick our colorations that we can live with and ramble on.

I found that tubes, paired with the HE-5, alters to much of the original performance and turns up-side down the message of the artist and engineer. But I'm anal don't forget!!!

Most tubes don't interact with a low Z and low sensitivity all that well actually. They will show signs of very loose behavior! If you want the slam of natures dynamics and all the clarity that phone can deliver...Solid-State is a Solid choice! IMO............

And Kaspar...your fave the AD2, is a very...lets say not un-colored phone. Just a note and observation. Just because some sales person demo's the HD800 at a trade show with the "black-cube" doesn't means it's the finest way to power it. It's from Germany..AND it fit in a suit case!! And don't think that marketing and engineering at Sennheiser actually communicate with one an other. They probably don't. And how much of the Dac was Magic anyway? Under show conditions two minutes pass....and from that you know how something sounds? Actually the HD800 was telling you exactly what the chain sounds like!! Reality People..it bites! A bit of a rant but live with it!!!

Actually you'd be surprised how little difference there is between the sound of the HE-5 on the Phoenix and on the CSP-2. But with a giant Moth flying your way, you will be able to have the best of both worlds as well
