The HDP is more detailed and spacious than the EF5, but maybe a little more SS sounding than the tubey EF5 when paired with the HE-5 and blasted loudly. So you don't get the slightly rounded edges that help keep the HE-5 from sounding strident when pushing the volume and power limits to the max. The EF5 definitely has more power for driving the HE-5, giving the HE-5 a little more bass impact and quantity.

But the HDP is a little better with other phones than the EF5, especially with any IEM. I'd say the HDP works just as well with HE-5 as the Solo SRG II did, which other people have agreed works well with HE-5 (Skylab and mrarroyo I think). But while I thought the SRG II was better than EF5 with HD600 and HD800, I still thought the EF5 did just a little better with HE-5. They were obviously made for each other.

So I just picked up a pair of HE-5's, pretty excited for them. I realize that my ibasso D10 is going to struggle, so I think I'll be selling it off for a desktop dac/amp with more power. Are there any reasonable dac/amps that can power the he-5's at around the D10's price range? Thanks

It's not a $300 amp, but the Nuforce HDP 24/96 USB optical DAC/amp (24/192 coax) would be my recommendation. Go take a look at my review thread, and comments about the final production version. You could get half the money from selling the D10.

A used EF1 amp should do the trick for your budget, but it wont have a DAC like the D10 and you'll need to keep the D10 as a source. I suspect a Cavalli CTH would also be powerful enough, since it seemed to be on a similar power level to the EF1.

Thank you HPA for your recommendations so far. I'm thinking of possibly springing for the HDP, but I'd like to keep my options open. Any opinions for the hifiman ef2(possibly a bit underpowered), nuforce icon desktop, travagans red, green, or white? Thanks!

I just received a pair of HE5's from HK about an hour ago. I'm using them with my maxxed WA6SE. Plenty of headroom there. Comfortable listening at 12 O'clock for me using the low-imp jack (I'm using a TADAC 2008 for my front end). 2o'clock starts to get uncomfortably loud for me, but still no distortion. I wouldn't push it past that as I value my hearing. Sounds great right out of the box. My Grado GS1K's are on their way to their new owner so I cannot compare directly, but these certainly occur to me as more balanced in their presentation and do not have the midrange dip the GS1K's have. There's a certain crispness to the dynamic-driver cans that is perhaps slightly softened in what I hear, yet it seems to be revealing every bit as much detail as the Grados did - which is to say, very impressive on that level. What should I expect for burn-in time, and will they change much? I seem to recall the pair I heard at the local meet, also via a WA6SE, rendered a larger soundstage. Regardless, again, these are very nice to listen to brand new. There is nothing thus far that jumps out at me and brings out my critical side right off. I seem to recall reading in one thread (maybe this one) that there might have been some subtle changes in the current models being shipped. Can anyone shed any insight on that.

Glad to see that you are enjoying your new headphone. I believe new models come with star shaped cut out on the driver. If I remember correctly, this was done to tame the highs a bit.

Ya congrats on your new HE-5's Jax, Hope you enjoy them! I listened to both HE-5's, one without the star shaped foam and one with it, since I had to exchange my first pair due to some QC issues (early release). The pair with the star shaped foam seemed to sound less aggressive, and more controlled if that makes any sense. I am not sure how much difference this really makes, but for me, the noticeable change was a slightly more gentle representation, as if you eased off some of the harshness, made it more smooth... Have fun with the HE-5's, they are marvelous indeed! Cheers,

Thanks, Dae. There is indeed a star-shaped cutout over the driver. I'm not hearing any stridency in the highs right now, but have not spent much time with them yet. Playing random songs for a few hours, there has been at least one instance where I sensed the amp was straining, but thus far it's been isolated and I've also thrown some deliberately challenging stuff at it. I would say these are extremely revealing headphones. I'm hearing lots of things I hadn't heard before, some good, some not so good. That's saying a lot coming from GS1K's which I also felt shined a bright light in all the dark corners. Another nice quality they seem to share is that both are great at low-level listening.

Thank you, Mike. I had listened to a pair at a local meet, but did not pay attention to whether it was current or not as I was not aware of those differences. I definitely didn't feel it was overly aggressive, though certainly more aggressive than the HD800 I listened to on the same amp. Still, no stridency to speak of.

I would have to try all those amps again before I could comment, because I just don't remember. To see what I said before, you or I would have to check my links to reviews and impressions that I put in my public profile "about me".

after testing different cables with HE-5 the Cardas headphone cable(the same wich is also sold for HD-800)is a excellent match for the HE-5.Airy- smooth- natural-balanced.

I just got my LD MKVI+ one week. I re-terminated the stock cable with a neutrik 4-pin xlr plug, now the HE-5s are really singing. No sibilance at all. I set the volume at 12:00-1:00 o'clock. The bass is tight and with enough amount. Mids and highs are smooth with a lots of details, airy and transparent. Maybe there are some amps will drive the phones better, but I wondering how much better would be? Anyway, I am pretty satisfied with the new rig.

I've got the HE5/EF5 combo on the way, can't wait to hear it. For anyone in the states looking for this combo APS is now stocking the setup with the same discount and with a great deal on their V3 cable shipped from the states. I believe they worked out a deal with Fang apuresound

I'm pretty sure all HE-5s past the initial production run have the star. My first pair was part of the second batch they made and shipped out in late November and had the star, that didn't stop it from being extremely sibilant though.

You mean - the short white twisted single ended cable that comes with HE-5 has 4 wires in it? Not 3?

This is strange, I could bet my HE-5 stock cable is 3-wire-braided from Y joint to Neutrik stereo plug...
