HE-5..initial musings - Page 85

Jeez, Fang really needs to get on top of this. These headphones sound so good and are priced so nicely, that for people to not buy it because of easily addressable quality issues really is silly.

I hope bdh and toprock get their cans fixed promptly. I also hope they don't have to pay for shipping the headphones back as these are clearly manufacturing defects.

Agreed -

I hate to start a ruckus since its a great product for the price. I'll give them a call tomorrow (unless anyone knows of a better way to get a hold of Fang) and see what they say. The good news is that the issue is strictly cosmetic, so I can continue to enjoy listening until we find the best course of action

I'm also a DX-1000 owner and enthusiast. They've been my primary headphones for the past two years, easily besting the RS-1's I used previously.

While not in complete agreement, your comments comparing the HE-5 to the DX-1000 were of great interest to me. The DX-1000 has exellent imaging and sound stage. The bass is among the best of any headphones I've ever heard. But the real strength of this headphone is it's lush, involving mids.I find the oft described "echo" effect a non-issue.

The HE-5 is a more resolving headphone, presenting a great deal of transients, note attack/decay, and lots of micro-detail. It's a very clean, life-like, presentation that in some ways reminds you of an electrostatic. But at the same time, there is a dynamic punch and midrange richness usually associated with a good dynamic. For me, definitely no lack of emotion here.

The HE-5 scales up greatly with more powerful and better quality amplification. Try it on a small, preferably DHT, speaker amp.

In the end I'll dump my RS-1's, But I'll keep both the HE-5 and the DX-1000.
My DX-1000's are highly modified and sound quite different (and much better to me) than the stock DX-1000.

And my Jade electrostatics are also preferred above the HE-5, at least so far.

As far as emotion - it's all relative of course. Your broken-in HE-5 might be 'emotional' in your system with different amp and source, or it could be that my JVC and Jade are significantly more 'emotional' then the HE-5 and you just haven't heard that level of goodness yet. There's just no way to tell unless we can both hear each others setups.

Just got shipping notification on my new/repaired pair of HE-5s (don't know which one). Sent them in a little under 2 wks ago, and they are coming from china, so the turnaround appears to be about 3 weeks. On the long side, but oh well.

.
A little off topic here, but now you've got me curious about your DX-1000.

Heard the Jades off of "Ironbutt"s r to r tape system. Best headphone sound I've ever heard.

You can make that 4. Mine split right at the pin holding the ear cup after 6 hours of burn-in. It's been sent back for replacement.

When did you buy yours? Fang said the problem was fixed 2 weeks ago.

Who are you contacting to send the cans back? I sent an email to Head-Direct two days ago, and another one this morning with no response yet.

Hmmm, more problems are starting to surface... Either way my slight crack at the screw is not that bad, its barely visible, so I don't feel like sending them back, waiting three weeks, since then I would miss the sound of these cans. Of course if the crack starts to spread, then I will send them back... Besides this the music through these babies sounds just stunning, though these small QC issues are starting to irritate me, kind of makes me think twice about products from China...

You guys might want to look at what Fang has to say:

That's one thing I like about this hobby, the smaller manufactures really seem to take care of their customers.

On a different note:
I've always wanted to ask, do orthodynamics sound like electrostatics? They both have light weight diaphragms from my understanding.

That crack will most likely go thru eventually- I would get a new pair or talk to Fang.

Good to hear that the problem is being or has been addressed. I was considering purchasing these somewhere down the line.
