HE-5..initial musings - Page 69

Hey Baka1969,

Wouldn't your headroom mico amp power the HE-5 fairly well???? Since my friend has this amp and it has lots of power, drove the K701 effortlessly. Though I am not sure about the HE-5, I would think it would do a good job though... Good luck,

Wow, these headphones sound pretty, as I stated on another thread already.

Just want to say that I do not hear one bit of sibilance or brightness. My AD2000s, sr325i's, SRH840s all sound brighter. Mellow and rather melodic beasts I must say. Oh and what effortlessness!

Edit: Oh, mind you that I've paired them up with the EF-5. Burn-in time about 9 hours for both.

Just ordered them...damnit. I blame everybody who likes them.

I keep reading that 4 watt + amps are used for the HE-5 and the Glimore Lite is a 1/2 watt. The Headroom Micro is even less I believe. That said, the Headroom EASILY drives both the Senn 650 and the AKG 701. But from what I've been reading the HE-5 requires the power of a small nuclear reactor to be properly driven. I really don't want a headphone that won't reach it's full potential with the amps I currently have. Although I can (almost) justify having another can, getting another amp, especially one that will only used for the HE-5, is beyond even my warped sense of reasoning. Plus I have no way to audition it.

Darn

30 day return policy.....
I think some people are getting too fixated on their amplifier's output power in regards to driving the HE-5. I'm still using the Elekit TU-882 because my EF-5 vanished after it left China last Thursday and its output power is "only" 200mWpc which is more than enough to cause permanent hearing damage.

At a stated efficiency of 87dB/mW, one Watt going into the HE5 would mean 117dB which is way, way louder than anyone should ever listen to music. Whoever says these things need more than a Watt into 25 ohms is just bonkers, and there is more to an amplifier than just output power.

Lol, when I question earlier on in this thread about the wisdom of using 300-watt Krell monoblocks, I got a lecture about the 'arithmetic needs of power and how the physical laws applies'.

I resemble that remark...and stand buy it. No dynamics in Modern Music, so everyone is fine. Uncorked Classics need a bit more....IMO!

Hey Ross,
If you are not impulsive (like me and a good deal of Head-Fiers), and you can wait 3 months, then you can attend the NYC Spring Meet in March/April and give the headphones a real good demo. If you are impulsive, then you can buy them now, and chances are, you won't have to return them provided you find the proper amp for them.

...and Tim, I know this has been brought up before in TTVJ and Headroom threads announcing new products, and I know that you've had some issues with sibilance in a sibilant world, but it upsets me every time someone brings up a 30 day return policy. I know your specific instance called for a return or exchange, but every time that someone posts "don't worry about it, you have a 30 day refund" doesn't really take into effect how much this hurts a manufacturer or distributor, when this policy is abused. Perhaps, this is why I was rude to Sachu.

Whenever a smaller distributor like TTVJ takes back a product that they sell, they now have a used product that they have to sell as a "B" item which they loose money on. If it were my business, I would offer this policy so that people have an "out" if they made a real bad buying decision, but if enough people exercise the return policy, I would be put out of business.
Think about the bigger picture here.
While it sounds as a great option to us, we are not talking Sony or Panasonic here, and besides mismanagement of funds, is probably a good reason why Circuit City went out of business.
IMHO, of course.

I never returned the HE-5 to Fang. I ended up selling it to penger for 40$ less than what it would've cost him (or me if I decide to buy another). I am glad he likes it and enjoys the HE-5.

ok, this is going to come out sound bad... Does anyone know how the people who are making these headphones are being treated. As far as I know a lot is left up to the employer. If I am paying this much money for the product I'd like to be somehow assured, the workers are under good conditions. Does anybody know anything about the he-5/ef-5 manufactures. This is not meant to derail the thread, Head-Direct makes excellent products.

P.S. I have nothing against Chinese goods. They usually have great quality control and competitive pricing. I just feel guilty sometimes wondering about human rights issues which occur in China.

A win-win compromise. As long as all parties are happy.
I meant, when I said my nasty remark to you, about saying a couple of times "just Return them". But we've worked that out through proper communication and life has moved on the way that it should have.

Government politics and religion not allowed in the threads. Always turns into a no-win situation which eventually gets threads closed.
