I'm working on a block diagram for a JISBOS-based balanced active preamp/headphone amp. I'm to the outputs and have a conundrum.
From a practical standpoint, I want my line output (to amp or receiver for speakers) to be defeated when I use headphones. On SE designs this is usually handled quite easily just running the signal through a switched TRS headphone jack, which breaks the connection when a headphone is plugged in.
I want operation of the preamp to be simple for my wife (who rarely uses headphones) and me (who rarely uses speakers). I would rather not use one more switch (or have to use more poles on an existing selector switch). My design is probably already too complicated as it is.
My problem is, I haven't been able to find any such animal as a normalled XLR jack, be it 3, 4, or 5-pin. The Neutrik Combo jacks are normalled just for the 1/4" part of the jack, from what I can tell.
Am I relegated to using dual TRS jacks (like in my current setup)? I was hoping to "upgrade" to a single 4- or 5- pin XLR for the balanced headphone-out part of this build. In spite of this, I will probably end up using two TRS jacks for the dual-SE headphone-out part of the build. Using just the TRS jacks for both output configurations would be simpler--it just means I have to plug in two connectors instead of one when I connect my balanced headphones. I know...want to have my cake and eat it too.
Thoughts?
