Got my Iaudio7 16GB last week and must say it's not louder than the Sony NWZ-A818 I previously had. (A818=10+10mW; Iaudio=24+24mW)

SQ wise is much better, it's like the pillow has finally been removed from between you and the player. A brighter and wider sound with the bass still in the place. Though still not as livey as the old iFP-795, which remains king in this regard after five years (my brother still has one, but 512MB )

Another comparison I made with the Sony PCM-D50 (rated 25+25mW). The Sony blows. Some classical tracks I listen on i7 at 33/40, on the Sony they are just as loud at 2/10 (that is 8/40).

Could it be, since I bought the i7 from within the EU, that the EU volume regulations have been crippled the max. output of the player? Or just a lemon I got?
