Cord on my Ety's

I have looked through many pictures of the Ety's ER-4P but all the cables look different than mine. I even went onto the Etymotic website and that cable was different.

My cable looks very thin. There are two for each ear and they are intertwined. Unfortunately I do not have a picture right now but I will try and post one maybe tommorrow.

Did I get ripped off on this, is this a better cable, is this a worse cable? I have not yet seen a cable that looks similar to this.

Has anyone heard of this?

Please let me know.

Thanks

Dear stupid_girl_says:

I had the Etymotic ER-4S but the thin cords that attached from both earplugs to the little grey cylinder were straight and they were not twisted. I think that you have the "better" version which is to say that the twisted wire leading from both earplugs is supposed to mitigate the effects of microphonics. In other words, the twisted pairs of wire leading from each earplug are designed that way so that when they brush against something (like your shirt), they produce less noise. I can't comment on whether this is indeed true. You did not get "ripped off" whatsoever. Don't worry too much about the little things in audio; just enjoy the music. Some audio manufacturers produce pretty much the same product but they are not all manufactured in identical fashion. Just enjoy the music.

Do you think that it would benifit me to get upgrade my cable?

May I please ask you what you mean by upgrading your cable? Do you have the Etymotic ER-4P? Are you looking for the 4P to 4S convertor cable? Or, are you talking about getting Dr. Xin's aftermarket Etymotic ER-4X cable? For what it is worth, I only have experience with the Etymotic ER-4S earphones. I can't comment on the 4P -> 4S adaptor cable nor Dr. Xin's cable modifications. Do a search. In my opinion, the ER-4S earphones are fine; as a matter of fact, I regret having sold my pair a few months ago...

Ya I would be looking at buying either an aftermarket ER-4X cable or a different brand cable (is that possible?)

DsLFoolisH-- Ya that is what it must be. But I still like the look of the solid wire.

That was the new project cord That Don Wilson talked about. Altho I haven't heard of official upgrade annonce ( probalby missed or it was never annonced) if it look intertwined you probably got the better version.

Looks like you have one that is better than the cord most of us have. Maybe I need to take a trip to Elk Grove Village and see about an upgrade.

I just looked at the Ety site and it states that "The ER-4P has a new cable. The cable is of a different construction, and uses a different insulation material that is softer and more pliable. The goals were to reduce the mechanical cord noise and improve the flexibility and appearance." Does anyone know what the new cable looks like and when this cable change took place? I ask as I'm thinking about purchasing a unit and want to ensure that I receive the most current cable. thanks

I spoke to Charlene at Etymotic and she said the production of ER-4s now have the new braided cable (from September I think she said). You can get an upgrade to your existing Etys for $50 plus shipping.

I am a bit peeved as I just got my ER-4Ps and I use them whilst walking in the morning and I really could have used the better damping of the new cable.

Just out of interest, has anyone compared the solid cabled ER-4P to a new braided cable model? Just wondering how much more effective suppression of noise from cable movement has been achieved from the new design, especially versus looping the cable behind the ears which seems to work reasonably well.

Thanks.

Well I do not even need to wrap the cord around my ears to reduce the microphonics. I can walk around with the etys on and I barely notice the microphonics with music on.

If you wanted to wrap the cord around your ear, it would be much easier with this cord compared to the bigger cable. This cable is so small and flexible.

Sounds great! I just ordered a pair of ER-4Ps from Headroom at the sale price - what a bargain, $235 shipped to the UK!
