According to Spotify - Wikipedia it use audio streams encoded to Vorbis q5 (approx ~160 kbit/s)[13]. Or q9 (approx ~320kbit/s) for premium subscribers.
While iTunes Store use AAC files at 128 and 256 kbit/s.

So Spotify should have a small edge on iTunes Store, according to bitrate alone. Not quite sure how Vorbis and AAC compare though, bitrate vs. sound quality wise.

Congratulation ! Paid Spotify is all-you-can-listen 320k , you can't get better at that price.

I've had a premium Spotify subscription since "day one", though it's a great service with a very good SQ I still think Spotify should incorporate some of the iTunes functionality. What I'd really like to see in Spotify is the ability to browse genres and artists iTunes style. As it is today you need to search for a specific artist, album or song.

It is good, but unfortunately there are a few key artists still missing from spotify

First of all, it's not available in america.
If you have an android, iphone/ipod touch, or soon to be supported symbian device you can take 3,333 tracks with you. (check youtube for how it does this, it's very clever)
Good quality even with the free version.
Huge library, but the like of the Beatles and Pink Floyd aren't there (copyright issues)
I prefer the interface over iTunes, the software itself takes up very little ram.
Everything is pretty much instant with it, it feels like tracks are already on your computer.
You can only keep the tracks if you keep up the subscription. Edit: You can now buy tracks!

But try it out for yourself How to get Spotify accounts without an invite | Spotifyripping.com shows you how if you're in america/ other unsupported countrys. It'll only work for 14 days though. Ohh, and the free version is ad supported.

Personally i think its the future of music, for those that can afford it anyway.

Spotify is still in its beta phase, they will launch in the US when they go live (whenever that is... ) The recently launched iPhone client works like a charm, I use it every day while at work. Any playlist that I add in my OS X client will automatically show up on my iPhone, and vise versa. Only difference between the desktop client and the iPhone one is that the mobile version only streams in 160 kbs.

The biggest difference between Spotify and other music services is that Spotify works almost like a bit torrent network, all songs that you play on you client is shared or streamed to other users on the network, that's why the music starts in an instant The latest release of the desktop client allows offline storage as well.
