The Antelope Zodiac / Zodiac + / Zodiac Gold DAC Thread - Page 20

Excellent!  You got yours pretty fast after I got mine, fairly quick service from Welborne.  The length of the power supply is identical to the length of the Antelope, it really is a great match looks wise....basically the same type of chasis.  I have been running it in non stop since the moment I hooked it up, I am at maybe 24 hours.  Did you get black or red?  I went with the 1 ft. umbilical.

edit: here are a couple pics of mine for those interested.

I got black, it seemed the obvious choice.  I didn't specify an umbilical length they just defaulted to 3' or thereabouts.  I haven't actually measured it or anything but it is a good length for my setup.

Small update,

I have been very busy lately, but have definitely left my Antelope playing on my studio setup.  With the new power supply, it has definitely put the icing on the cake....I am completely satisfied with my DAC now and have no urge to look for anything else.  In regards to my studio setup I feel imaging has improved slightly, and front to back depth has also increased.  I always felt the impact was already excellent so I really didn't notice much of a change in that regard, maybe slightly more.  I think what it has done mainly is let the Antelope's true nature shine through by ditching that noisy switching power supply.  In short, I am loving it!

I apologize to those waiting for the review, I have basically been non stop working.  It will be coming!  But there is no way you will be disappointed with this DAC, so long as the rest of your audio chain is up to par.

Has anyone compared using a hiface evo with aes to zodiac+ as opposed to using straight usb or optical from computer??

Hi TigzStudio,

Curious about how the Violectric compares to your Zodiacs headphone out ?

Best wishes

To these ears both are quite neutral however the Violectric gives a more full bodied sound, or more weight.  Straight out of the Zodiac+ (unbalanced) seems a tad leaner (less weight) and thus feels as if you get more treble or high freq info. coming across.  However I must note that I am comparing balanced 4-pin from the v181 vs. unblanaced out of the Zodiac+.  I will switch my v181 to unbalanced again and let you know a more fair comparison sometime soon.  But the vast majority of my listening is Zodiac+-->XLR-->v181-->4-pin balanced LCD-2.  This is my system outside of my small studio used for relaxing/pleasurable listening.  I also have some active monitors in this system which are being fed from the Zodiac+-->v181--> dual 1/4", and it sounds fantastic.  I have absolutely no desire to change a single thing in this system, and it has been that way for months.  Hopefully I will be able to demo a Zodiac Gold w/ Voltikus power supply when it comes out in order to tell the difference between my Zodiac+ and the Welborne Labs power supply. :)

Thanks TigzStudio,

I have my LCD-2 with ALO 8 Wire Chain Mail wire hooked up to a Zodiac plus, and it sounds really nice. I first had the Ultrasone edition 10 for a month (500+ hours burn in) but returned them since they sounded shrill. They still had some magic in them, but I couldn't stand to listen to them for to long at time even though the comfort was really really good (quite a bit better than the LCD-2). With the LCD-2 and the Zodiac, I feel like I can listen all day long

But I still wonder if the sound can be even better, and it sounds like a nice headphone amp could do the trick, I might look into that o2smile.gif

Cheers

I received my Zodiac+ a couple of days ago. At the moment I am running HD650's, LA2000 and IE8 straight from headphone out and it sounds really impressive. I am sticking mostly with the HD650's. It is by far the best sounding DAC I have ever listened too. I will be running a Mini Max (BG's) soon out of the SE line out. My plan is to get a Balanced M^3 with bass boost (dial) & LCD2's.  I just need someone to build me one! I have the parts with boards populated.

I'm trying to decided between a hi-end usb cable (Axis from Lee) or a wireworld supanova optical running from my laptop. Anyone have any advice between the two???

Indeed with a proper amp the Zodiac+ will most definitely satisfy you.  If you are only listening to your Zodiac+ with its built in headphone amps you really aren't getting its full potential.  My Zodiac+(w/Welborne PSU)->V181->balanced LCD-2 is still bliss to the ears and I have no desire to change a single thing in this system.  I am actually thinking about getting the Zodiac gold for a separate system soon.

Congrats!  I agree that the headphone out of the Zodiac+ is not bad.  However, when you get the right headphone amp to team up with your Zodiac+ you are in for a treat.  You guys may also want to look into the custom power supply from Welborne ( I have no affiliation with them by the way ) , but it definitely does benefit from my perspective.  I have also upgraded my firewire/usb cables, but I have not tried either of the cables you mentioned.  Hopefully soon I will be trying out the Zodiac Gold with their Voltikus power supply to see if there is a difference.  Regardless, the Zodiac+ has made me a lifelong Antelope fan.

If you order from welborne don't ever place an order with them through their automated system... email with a representative only.  They lost an order of mine (but still took my money) on some other random stuff for a month and I am still waiting 2 weeks from when they "found" my order with no sign of said package.  I'm seriously doubting if I would ever do business with them again to be quite honest.

Thnx TigzStudio. I have decided to go all out on the digital side and bought a sonicweld diverter 24/96 and a locus design Axis USB cable. For the coax I'm buying a black cat voloce 123 (stereovox) bnc to RCA from cable company. Seems to be an excellent cable for the money. Anyone tried it?
Amp and lcd2 next.
How much was the welborne psu and do you have a contact? Is the difference obvious or not?

Also TigzStudio, what monitors have you got hooked up to the zodiac+? I'm interested in going down that route also when funds permit. I was looking at the base model focal monitors.

The zodiac+ has improved alot in the first 50-75 hours. Especially with bass. So much detail, I never thought I'd like 'neutral' this much. Just does everything right. Can't wait to amp it properly.

True, I apologize I did not mention some of the issues Bebop has had with them that I knew about, his transaction was pretty rough.  I personally had a smooth transaction, so YMMV.  I would hope that they would learn from the mistakes and be able to provide better service for the future, but I can't say for sure.

Nice!  Sounds like you are on your way to a great system.  If my memory serves the psu was somewhere around $225.00, do note that bebop also had an issue with the connector on his from Welborne.  You may need to provide them with the details of the psu you currently have with the Zodiac+ as it seems it may vary manufacture wise (especially the connector length/diamenter).  So if you decide to try it out, definitely take bebops advice and talk to a representative about it first.  I believe I had a different stock PSU that came with my Zodiac+ compared to Bebop as well.

I have a couple different monitors I use right now, Adam A8X and KRK G2 series.  I am actually amazed at the quality bass the KRKS give me with the Zodiac+.  The Adams of course are just all around superb.  I don't have enough listening time on many Focal monitors to make any statements about them.  Best thing to do is try and demo some on nicer systems if possible (hopefully with proper room acoustics setup).

My thoughts mirror your early thoughts as well, it just does everything "right".  I am glad to see more people giving the Zodiac a shot.  I have a feeling you will enjoy it for quite a long time.

edit:  Forgot to mention, check out this thread and you will find there are some other options for power supplies with your Zodiac+.  Soon you will be able to purchase the upgraded power supply from Antelope themselves (February?) as well.  I may actually go this route to compare with my Welborne.

The psu transaction was fine, I ordered some other things later for some random diy projects and because it was not a custom order I just ordered through their website and they just lost my order for a long time somehow.  I am still waiting for delivery, since they "found" my order when I tried to ask them why shipping was taking over a month.  I am just impatient maybe but it's been quite a long time since I initially placed my order.
