Interest Check: Ultimate Beatles Song Survey/Project/Game

Who would be interested in undertaking a project to determine which Beatles song is the undisputed Head-Fi favorite? And in the process... we'll determine the Top 20 and various statistics as well.

This is just an interest check. If this idea is received positively, then I'll be glad to facilitate and moderate it Here's what I was thinking...

Quote:
Proposed Process:

Phase 1: Building the Top 100 - I will create a new thread for Phase 1 and everyone who wants to participate posts their unranked list of 30 nominated tracks at most. The Top 100 songs (based on number of nominations) will make it on to the next phase. It's highly encouraged that you submit 30 tracks even if you're not required to do so since we're trying to build a 100-song "short list".

(NOTE 1: The Top 100 will not be ranked since this is only a nomination phase.)

(NOTE 2: In the event that a lot of songs are vying for the last slots on the Top 100 [e.g. - ten songs have 1 nomination each but there are only five slots left] I have no choice but to exercise my personal decision on which songs make it through. But because I have this power, I'm not allowed to participate in the nomination process/not allowed to submit my list of nominees. [An alternative option is to have a tiebreak thread, but having a tiebreak round everytime there's a tie will prolong the process too much, imho])

Phase 2: Breaking it down to the Top 20 - I will create a new thread for Phase 2. This will be done "Survivor Style" where the voters will pick 10 songs to be eliminated per round for 10 Rounds. Ten songs will be eliminated per round for the first six rounds and then five songs will be eliminated per round for the last four rounds. After the 10 rounds, we will be left with the Top 20 songs.

(NOTE 1: If multiple songs are found tied for elimination, I will first check their votes in the previous rounds before exercising my personal decision on which songs make it through... but as with Phase 1, I can't participate otherwise.)

(NOTE 2: There will be 10 rounds for this phase, but only 1 thread so that the forum won't be cluttered. I just plan to edit the thread subject/title and OP per round.)

Phase 3: Ranking the Top 20 - I will create a new thread for Phase 3. This final phase will be simple: The participants will rank the final 20 songs in order of preference. It's a daunting task; but since you've already been given advance notice, the assumption is that you've had enough foresight to rank the remaining songs. Each rank will have a weighted score, and I will tally the scores after all the lists have been submitted. The song with the best score afterward will be the winner.
...and that's it!

I've already refined the process to be like this since I've already tried this out on a different forum and the results have been very promising. We're down to the Top 30 songs over there.

But if there are any suggestions, improvements, comments, violent reactions or whatever... feel free to post

^ Not so fast This is just an interest check....

Although with only you replying so far and only 4 other people voting on the poll... thing's aren't looking too good.

There might not be enough people interested for this to work.

well........maybe there's a simpler way to do it? I bet you if you put up a thread asking Name your 10 favorite Beatle Songs in order.................you'd get 50 responses in a week...........I would do this myself, but this was your idea and I don't feel right stealing it:-) But I'm very excited to see what Head-fi ranks as the top 20 Beatles Songs..........I'd love to take a guess, but I'll save that for later............

If you put up this thread of the top 10 Beatles songs, I'll happily tally up the results by awarding the favorite song 10 Points all the way down to the least favorite song on 1 point.......so for instance here would be a mock list.....

1. Strawberry Fields Forever (10 Points)
2. A Day In The Life (9 Points)
3. Eleanor Rigby (8 Points)
4. Something (7 Points)
5. Let It Be (6 Points)
6. Hey Bulldog (5 Points)
7. Blackbird (4 Points)
8. I Feel Fine (3 Points)
9. Day Tripper (2 Points)
10. Penny Lane (1 Point)

And then at the end which ever song has the most points.........will be declared the winner and you can compile a top 10 list from this.....this is just a mock list, not my personal opinion.

If we're going to be properly democratic about this, given that you stir-up enough interest to make it democratic and interesting, you're going to end up with a shoot-out between the 8 most recognizable Beatles tunes. Because there _are_ Beatles fans, and then there are many, many more people with a passing interest in the Beatles. It's democracy!-but the vote of the guy who heard that European chick cover "Strawberry Fields" a few years back will be the same as the guy who could do 60 Beatles songs at Karaoke Night.

So you really think Head-fi will vote in a list which essentially looks like.....

Let It Be
Hey Jude
Yesterday
She Loves You
A Hard Day's Night
I Want To Hold Your Hand
Twist And Shout
Yellow Submarine
Eleanor Rigby
A Day In The Life
Help!

.....something Like that

First of all, what _are_ the 8 most recognizable Beatles tunes?

Secondly, although I agree with your statement, that's partly what I feel is interesting about conducting this project: To see what kind of taste Head-Fi has as projected by their choice of songs and what tracks are booted out each round en route to the Top 20.

That's also why I want to do it the long way: So that you can make observations and see the trends. You can see who among The Beatles is favored as a composer. You can see what albums Head-Fi'ers percieve to have the strongest tracks. Etc, etc, etc...

Intriguingly, on the forum where I'm currently doing this in, we're down to the last 25 songs and only four (4) from these songs that you mentioned are still in the running

Personally, I'm excited at the prospect. If this thread is alive long enough, maybe it can generate enough interest.

Just to give an idea of how many people participated on the forum where I'm currently doing this:

- Around 35 users submitted their 30-song nominations list during the nominations phase;
- and, around 25 users submitted their choice of 10 songs to be eliminated per round during the "survivor phase."

If we can get that kind of participation here, I'm all for it.

EDIT: BTW DavidMahler, if you want to do a similar project via the method you proposed... Feel free. I'd participate.

If we go by lastfm's top Beatles songs:

Come Together
Let It Be
Here Comes the Sun
Yesterday
Something
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
Eleanor Rigby
Help!
All You Need Is Love
Yellow Submarine

These are probably The Beatles's most recognizable tracks, and any top Beatles song topic will be dominated by these songs.

And anyway, should the Abbey Road medley be considered several songs or one song?

Half of those have already been eliminated on the one I'm currently doing.

Abbey Road Medly - several songs
