Any suggestions? Rather there not be vocals unless its like a choir or something tastefully done, I find the drinking sing-song style rather grating.

thanks in advance

Hesparus is a band specialised in early Celtic music and American Appalachian music. I highly recommend their CD Celtic Roots. Ensemble Galilei is more classically inclined, and while their chamber-music approach seems to dim down the music's folksiness and spontaneity, they have enough elegance to win any heart. Their CDs under Telarc sound awesome.

I think that you'd like the famous Chieftains 1 Album. It's *purist* and has some wonderful playing on it. Recorded in 1963, it's pretty hardcore trad, and co-conspirators like Sting, Nanci Griffith, and Sinead O'Connor are still nought more dan twinkles in deir fadders' oies.
