I have a prototype sample which looks different than the above pic from HPA, but that was known due to being a prototype sample.

Quick summary: highly impressed with these as they have great space, are very balanced, have excellent fine detail, yet are not dull. Biggest issue is the fit for me, but I have finally been able to consistently get a good seal. More detail in this post and this post.

I think you will still want to get RE0 for isolation.

I do think I screwed up the photos. The close-up photo or both may be the RE3 prototype with nylon sleeve cable, and not the newer RE252 which has the less microphonic rubberized feeling cable. My report of the mild micro-phonics with activity that are improved with the shirt clip or over the ear position, however, was in regards to the newer rubberized RE252 cable and not the fabric covered cable. I'll try to update the photos later. Sorry.

Looks like we agree on the RE252 vs IE8 comparo, and we both discovered the up-side down cable over the ear trick too! Cool.

Yes, great write up as usual, especially because a lot of it agrees with my thoughts I think my IE8 is going to be for sale soon.

How did the fit suddenly get bad? I have the RE2 and RE0 that fit just fine. Did they forget how to make good-fitting headphones?

From what I gather I have larger than usual ear canals. Not that having larger than usual ear canals makes it OK, but I had problems with the IE8 also. I can wear them with the cable down, but sometimes I will lose my seal every 5-10 minutes, other times not. I think it depends on how lubricated my ear canals are at the time.

They are super comfortable either way.

Yea, I have thought about it so they don't look like something trekkies would come up to me and ask about (I am not a trekkie), but just have not had the reason to at this point. Maybe I will, but it is so final! They might fit my ears better with the cable down without the arm, but I do usually wear IEMs with the cable over my ears.

But I must say, good sounding IEM none-the-less.

Good to know, in case I get a pair down the road. It is final, but with the RE3s, made not a bit of difference in terms of staying in my ears, only caused pain (and that was the reason I chopped them off).

The fit is fine, and more comfortable than the RE2 due to the softer body.
