My Denon AH-D5000 sounds excellent without any mods - Page 2

If you like the D5000 thatg much then you owe to yourself to try the D7000. They D7000 are far superior in sound to the D5000. I had the D5000 and now the D7000 and if you can go balanced even better.

Out of my collection the D7000 are my favorite in performance and comfort.

Oh great, thanks for the info.

Should the topic starter be happy with his recently bought D5000s?
No of course not, the D7000s are far superior, he ows it to himself to immediately get rid of the 'cheap' D5000's and get a new pair of D7000s.

The normal D7000s?
Well they only sound fair, you have to owe it to yourself to at least get the balanced ones.

The balanced D7000s?
Are you kidding me, they are decent and all, but they desperately need a mod...

Come on please, what's the point of your post?

Wobblegate demands more empirical evidence. That is why I asked for a larger sample size.

I don't have an amp right now. It's plugged directly into an old DVD player. I'm planning to get Woo Audio 6 for the D5000. Yes, I know there is some suggestion that the D5000 sync well with solid-state amps, but I have heard too many good things about the WA6 to discount it.

Do you find it a big improvement?
Speaking for myself: I find my Audio Technica A500's the bargain of the century.
They deliver about 80% of what the D5000s do and this with well recorded complex and dense classical orchestral music.
With simpler material (and amplified instruments) like pop and rock I find very little improvement.
For what it's worth: the 'only' 20% improvement over the A500's I was brabbling about is a big improvement and worth every penny.
My god, they sounds so absolutely gorgeous and pristine with classical music...true the bass can color the low mids a bit, but I find it very attractive, it gives extra weight and warmth.
Harmonia Mundi's very close miked recording of Bach's Violin Concertos with Andrew Manze is completely grain free and without any edge or shrill tone.
No other headphones I auditioned ever achieved this, there always was an edge or some side noises.
I have found my final pair of headphones.

Shuttleboi, congrats with your D5000's, I am sure you're gonna like them as much as I do.

I, like you, thoroughly enjoyed my D5000 completely unmodded. With a decent solid state amp (I used the AMC XIA integrated), they sound very balanced and detailed, with deep bass that I never found overwhelming.

Mink,
Comparing the stock D5000 to stock D7000 IN MY OPINION the D7000 is far better sounding. I am not saying it is perfect and for many they might needs mods. That was a comparison apples to apples.

Now, If you take a look at my signature you can see that my D7000 are moded, balanced and with JMoney ear pads. Do they sound better than D7000 stock? Absolutley! and of course better than my former moded D5000 too.

People has said that low impedance headphones do not benefit form balancing. My experinece with mine is that they do improve inthe area of clarity, definition and control ans well as bigger soundstage.

Musicman,
I think you didn't get what I meant.
Of course the D7000s are better, but the topic starter has bought a new pair of D5000s, is proud of them and along comes someone who posts a message that says: well you may like the D5000's, but the D7000's are far superior.
Would you like to hear this as a reaction to your new pair of headphones?
Doesn't it take away a little joy and pride of your latest toys?

Anyway, you got some nice headphones in your singnature!

I've gone through the D2000, D5000, and D7000, and they all rested to one side or the other when placed on a flat surface.

I've decided to just go back to the D2000 because for the price ($230) it is exactly what I am looking for in a fun headphone. If I didn't already have other headphones better suited for other genres (ie. classical), the D5000 would be an easy choice.

I initially thought the D7000 sounded so much better than the D5000 because it does in fact have a more refined sound than its little brother. But on reflection I think there is just something about the D5000's sound with various types of music that causes me to like it a little more than the D7000.

Whatever...different strokes for different folks. The important thing is to just enjoy the music.

Personally I do.
I am alwyas thinking what is going to be my next move in the Hi-Fi or Head-Fi world.
I don't think you got me either. My comment was refering to if he likes the D5000 and wants to later upgrade the D7000 is the right way.

Peace.

I've heard it doesn't take much to power the Denon headphones. I even read some user reviews that said their stereo receivers provided their headphones with ample power.

You'd be surprised how easily Denons are to power. For the time being, I'm going straight out of my Marantz CD5003 and it sounds great. The SSMH and Beta 22 are to be built within the year hopefully.

Yes, the Denons are quiet easy to drive, but are not easy to drive well!
Currently, i'm using this class A solid state amp:

solid state amp

it is optimized for low impedance headphones. I can say the sound is very fast and detailed, expecially the bass and it has a huge soundstage.
It's an italian site; not sure, but i think the producer sells the amps everywhere.

Tube amps are really not that good with the Denons.
