The most overrated female vocalists - Page 3

Although it has been said before, it's worth repeating: Celi... oh crap, I can't even bring myself to finish typing her name! Just the thought of her voice makes me want to eat paint off of walls.

No one is supposed to consider Tori Amos an amazing singer - no doubt that if people did hold this belief, she would be overrated. However, Tori's music is absolutely stunning!

Just remember that without her, you probably wouldnt be listening to Regina Spektor

Diana Ross is highly over-rated....she was never a great singer.

Most overrated female vocalist has got to be Susan Boyle. She goes on a talent show without sucking and suddenly she's the greatest female vocalist to have ever lived. What a joke!

Agreed, although she was handed some great songs to sing. She was what we now call a Diva.

Not a fan of Celine Dion, but to those who dislike her- I would have great fun reading your reasons for that. Willing to share? Because I know some people who really hate her personality and attitude, but like her voice.

Well, I just did, and... I like pretty high voices, but that was something not for me. Also, I prefer real bands above these divas who take all the honor.

I'm surprised no one has said Barbara Streisand yet.

I suppose she is talented (especially very early on) but her whole attitude and the diva thing just grate me no end.

Purely technically she has some chops but .....

no where near the talent of Billie Holiday, Anita O'Day, Esther Phillips, Edith Piaf to name a few across multiple genres

EDIT: Looking at some of the posts, i'm wondering if some have actually looked in a dictionary at the word "overrated". Overrated at least on the basic level implies critical praise that is inappropriate. Certainly Miley Cyrus and Jessica Simpson have not been awash in critical praise.

Janis Joplin may fit the bill though I'm on the fence about her. She was very talented and more importantly a trailblazer but her tragic story may elevate her more than her talent might have. However doubters should listen to Pearl and specifically "me and bobby McGhee" before deciding if she could really sing.

Overrated female vocalists based on their overall talent

If the former, I would tend to agree with you, vcoheda. Her voice is not all that great sometimes, but it has a great soothing quality during others.
If we are comparing her talent overall, I would put her up against any female vocalist when you take into account her live show and writing ability.

The female vocalists I cannot stand are Diana Krall and Stevie Nicks. Kill me...
Great point!
If a singer is judged only by his/her vocal ability and how high a note they can hit, then Céline Dion, Mariah Carey and the likes would be at the top. Billie Holiday would not.
I don't think Frank Sinatra can hit any high notes but I would rather listen to him than Christina Aguilera anytime.
