You can buy reberbished 2nd and 3rd generation Ipods directly from Apple.

Refurbished iPods (without Dock Connector)

I hadn't heard that the second gen sounded better than the third. Could you point me to an article or thread where someone said that (hey, maybe my 1st gen is the best!)? Seems the line out on dock would make it better and I thought the unit itself was suppose to sound the same.

I just heard the current iPod...

The present iPod sounded good to my ears for the first time yesterday; probably, this was because I did not use the remote, and I did use a Xin supermini amp, with my Grado SR-125. This combo sounded very good.

I had been very critical of the iPod in previous listens, all direct to headphones or through the remote (no amplifier). Always bright, compressed treble and no midrange life.

Pulling the Xin amp out of the chain made it sound closer to what I remembered (glary upper midrange, like "condenser cackle", and weak bass and extreme treble). But, still not quite as bad as I recalled.

My guess is that the new ones in the stores now may sound better than ever... but I haven't tested enough units to be sure.
