Poll: Sound Quality of HP out ONLY : Touch 2G VS Touch 3G

I am interested in the sound quality out the headphone out with the 3G 64GB Touch' compared to the 32GB Touch.

PLEASE only vote in this poll IF you own both a 3G Touch and a 2G Touch or have heard both side by side and compared extensively. (with the same music and bit rate and EQ settings on each unit, etc, preferably EQ off for both units)

I am not interested in sound quality out the line out nor comparisons of each for this thread. I utilize the touch with the HP out exclusively. I own both the 64GB 3G Touch and the 32 GB 2G Touch currently.

I also have owned the 1G touch but am not interested in comparisons or feedback on the 1G Touch.

I am very curious as to others' thoughts on the sound quality of the 3G VS 2G Touch.

State which 3G Touch you have as well, as I understand the 8GB Touch has the the older chipset.

NOTE: Please do not turn this into a ' "X" Dap is superior to the iPod flame-fest..' thread. I know there are fans of all Mfr's, however, it would be useful for me to gather some insight on what other people owning both 3G/2G Touch's are saying about SQ out the HP out.

I currently have the iPod Touch 1g (32GB), and the iPod Touch 3g (64GB). I also had the iPod Touch 2g (32GB) for 3 months. I think that both the 2g and 3g are excellent, no hiss with either one straight out of the HP out with my JH13 or IE8. If I listen to them without any EQing, then the difference is not really there. However, when I listen(ed) to them with my IE8 with EQing, then the 3g is better. I remember that although the 2g would do the job fine 90% of the time with its EQ, a few songs were just horrible. The songs would become distorted. When I use my IE8 with EQ on my 3g, the songs were not distorted at all. Do bear in mind though, I am recalling the SQ of 2g from memory. The 3g sounds great with or without EQing, and that part I am sure.

I personally have tried the 1g and 2g, I guess the 2g is a bit better than the 1, but the 3g isn't THAT much better than the 2g... I bought my 3g because it was supposedly faster than the 2g by quite a bit.

You needed a "Both the same" option.

I had a 32GB 2G and now a 64GB 3G. Sound same to me really listening with Shure SE530's without EQ.

I am looking for comparisons and feedback on the 2G VS 3G only in this thread, not on the 1G unit.

Already completed tests with each of the 3G and 2G Touch units. I have also conducted many double blind tests with my wife, she has helped do the same blind tests for me.

I will share my feedback after more people have chimed in. Thanks to everyone whom have shared their feedback on the 3G/2G.

Did you compare the units side by side with the same music and settings or did you serve from memory? I thought about putting an option of "sounds the same". Hmm..

From memory, but I returned the 2G touch. Kept a 3G touch for much longer. I could be wrong, but it to my ears, something sounds different...better.

I wish I could offer input but I do want to say I'm glad this has been started. I currently have a 2g 32gb and really like it a lot. Both for all it can do and the surprising SQ from the HO. I'm looking hard at the 3g 64gb but don't want to sacrifice SQ so I'm paying close attention to this thread!

So... how about posting the results from your comparo, op?

which is the most neutral among 1G,2G, and 3G??

warrior: from my experience it was the opposite. I returned the 2G because of "boring" SQ, whereas I kept the 3G 32GB for it's more exciting SQ through my Etymotic ER6i's.

I didn't originally with my earlier post, but daughter wanted an iPod Touch so I picked her up a 2nd hand 16GB 2G Touch.

Made sure both were using same firmware (latest) then did trials with same songs with my Shure 530's including some blind tests and I couldn't tell any difference.

You know, even played 10-15s sections back swapping each time but couldn't pick up any difference at all but could be I don't have "Golden" ears

Good input! Makes sense since I keep hearing the internals in regards to the HO and the DAC are the same as the 2g.

I'd say identical. If you listen in a quiet room there is still a very slight hiss with the Shures when you pause a song for a few seconds (internal circuits must then power off as it goes totally silent then). Both the 2G & 3G have this same slight hiss and both go silent within the same time frame.

PS. This hiss with the Shure SE530's is no issue, you REALLY have to be listening for it with absolutely no outside noise level.
