mini 3 vs pimeta v2

Hello all,

I don;t want to cause any problems asking this question here, as I have much respect for both tomb and amb. I am wondering, however, what are the differences in sonics between these two amps, when run from one or two 9v batteries in a portable application.

I do not care about the size, or eas of build, only the performance. i'll be using them almost exclusively with the new grado gr8 iems, which are efficient, and 120 ohms. my toshiba gigabeat f40 drives them fine, but i want to improve the sound, and want it to sound better than my diy jseaber cmoy, which i think sounds pretty good already.

i also have a mini 3, which i bought already built, as i messed up the first two i tried to do myself. so far, i don't think it likes the grados very much, but i just got it today, and have not given it much time yet.

if you don;t want to make a public sonic comparison of the pimeta v2 vs the mini 3, fel free to pm me.

thanks for listening!

Maybe you mean Tangent (PIMETA) and AMB (Mini3)? I have nothing to do with the design of the PIMETA, although I'd love to build the V2 someday soon. I built two of the original and have parts to do the same with the Mini3, but I've been too busy with cetoole's/dsavitsk's stuff lately.

I was part of the prototype team for the Pimeta v2. My amp is running OPA2107 and OPA602. Bias on the op-amps is ~10ma. So draw is 80mA.

I also have a Pimeta V1. OPA2107/227 with Sijosae buffers in LR and BUF634 in the ground. Draw is in the 60mA range IIRC.

I have a Carrie, so the USB powered Mini^3 with mine running at 8V (so very close to the original).

If you want to run on 9V, I would go with the Mini^3. Current draw will be less and give you a longer run time.

If you want to go with a slightly larger case, the Pimeta fits in the 1455J1201 with 12AAA (800-1000mAH). this will give you a longer runtime. Both of my Pimeta's are setup this way. I have to thank the aforementioned tomb for the design.

One thing about the Pimeta is that you can roll opamps as you can socket them. Then you can go read the op-amp thread and spend all your time tweaking your sound. I have tried the LME49720/49710 combo and it could be to some people liking, but was not my favorite.

So not much help on the sound, but I find that hard to describe and I tend to be using an different op-amps than everyone else. I can say I prefer the discrete buffers in my PimetaV1 over the LMH6321s in the Pimeta V2. It is hard to describe but the is something about the LMHs that seem a little off for my liking. the V2 is likely going to be For Sale forum soon to help finance a CK2III as I don't need three portables.
