though having a DT880 I'd recommend K701 (Don't know your budget but is seems a reasonable buy for performance).
I do not currently own the D5000, but recommended them. However, I do own the K501 and would recommend them as well--over and above the K701. : )

Just rhetoric remark but people in general recommend the headphone that they find best for strings. Hardly anyone have owned every headphone in the planet and the answer would probably not be the same anyway lol
It's more than possible that someone with his involvement in the community happened to visit one of the many, many gatherings that have occurred during his membership time and also more than likely that people at those gatherings had K1000s.

So, you do not find it likely that 'kool bubba ice':
* have auditioned a K1000 one or several times? In a store, at a Head-Fi meeting, or like.
* have previously owned a K1000, but no longer do so?

It was more a reply to Yassis mentioning that people recommend the headphones they have heard instead of headphones they haven“t heard

Pretty much any of the Stax Lambdas. SR-007 I'd be afraid doesn't have enough treble presence, and some of the older Stax don't have as refined and extended highs. Any of them from SR-5NB/SR-X Mk3 on beat the crap out of most dynamics, including AKGs. I would know, I own a K340 and used to have a K501 and two K240 Sextetts. K340 needs more modding, though.

Edit: Try not to get any closed headphones, which sound like complete junk with classical music, in my experience.

I was planning on a set of K702 exactly for this type of classical music. Stringed instrument concertos etc., like the Four Seasons. I heard them with the K702 and loved it.

Having owned and analyzed the K701 for a long time, I would say that they are nice with violins, but not perfect.
The K701 is more at home with the piano and female vocals. The stock K701 tends to de-emphasize some of the harmonics of violins and has a fractionally lean midrange. It is very transparent though. And it has very very tight bass.
Fut the midrange although good does not set the gold standard as it tends to subdue the full harmonics of violins and woodwinds. It is still a very good choice and I guess that the right recable and the right tube amp brings out tiers best.
