Looking for a new DAP

Well, my Archos 5's headphone jack just broke for the third time, and this time I've got no warranty. So (in addition to taking a soldering iron to it) I'm in the market for a new DAP.

I want something high capacity (at least 30gb), preferably flash. Never been a fan of touch screens. I would need FLAC support, and of course good SQ.

I was thinking an 8gb clip+ with a 16gb microSDHC card, but I'd really like to hold my entire library (about 40 gb).

The Cowon D2 is another option, but I'd rather have tactile controls.

Any comments on these players/different ideas?
Or is my dream of a high capacity flash player not going to happen?

If only that new Sony was coming to the US . . .

40GB Flash ? I'd suggest that you try hibernating for the northern Winter and hope that 32GB microSD cards become an affordable reality. For me, there was only one realistic choice, but I expect the Amp3 crowd will have some suggestions.

Yeah kind of what I expected. I think the most I could get with flash would be the D2, 16gb + a 32 gb SDHC. But I can't stand a touch screen, especially one that small.

It's a little surprising there aren't more high capacity flash players out there. I know the chips are expensive, but if I can get a 32 gb Sd for 80 bucks . . .

You could try getting a used 4th or 5th gen iPod off the internet. My 60GB Photo sounds great through the line out, and it cost me less than $40. They're pretty easy to work on, and have Rockbox support (there's your FLAC support and gapless playback). It would be a used DAP, but it would suit your needs and be a good inexpensive option to consider.

He said "preferably flash." That means he'd rather have flash, not has to have flash. There's not a whole lot of flash players with more than 30GB storage capacity. He says he doesn't want a touch screen so that rules out the iPod Touch/iPhone, Zune HD, and Cowon S9. What non-touch screen flash player with more than 30GB of storage space would you suggest?

I didn't suggest an iPod Classic, I suggested a 4th or 5th gen. And yes, I know iPod Classics use hard drives. There's no need to make me look that dumb.

BTW, he could do a 32GB compact flash mod on a 4th or 5th gen iPod too.

Thanks for the advice. I was just trying to make sure I hadn't accidentally overlooked any flash players, >32gb with out a touchscreen.

Have you ever put a compact flash in an iPod?

I actually have some 4th gen (with lovely monochrome screen) parts floating around somewhere, maybe I can get that working . . .

I've tried it unsucessfully with two different iPods. The first was a 20GB 4th gen. I thought the hard drive was toast, but it turned out to be the hard drive cable. The CF adaptor I ordered had a jumper on it for master/slave, and it was too big for the 20GB case, so I shortened it. It made a pressure spot on the screen, and I was afraid it would break the screen. When I "shortened" the jumper, I think I broke the CF adaptor, and the mod ended up not working. If you have a 40GB or 60GB (I don't think they made monochrome 60GB iPods), you shouldn't have that problem.

I also tried it with a 2nd gen iPod Mini. It uses a microdrive hard drive which is almost the same form factor of a CF card (the CF card fits the hard drive cable just fine). So far, it hasn't worked either, but it has bigger issues. I've replaced the logic board (paid more for that than the iPod itself...), the hard drive cable, and the click wheel. While I was last working on it, one of the battery cables came off the connector , and I gave up hope. I'm afraid I fried the good logic board too, but I'm too cheap to buy another battery after all that other work.

There are plenty of success stories though, so YMMV. I've seen some CF modded Minis on ebay, so check there too. They were going for about the same price or even less than what it would cost you to mod it yourself.

I've heard that the old Rio Karmas still sound stunning with a big compact flash card and an adapter. I have one Karma where the disk drive is kicking the click of death, and I may try the SS + adapter route.

A Rockbox iRiver iHP-120/140 with a 64gb or 100gb Pretec CF.
