Hippo VB Canal Phones - Page 2

i have to agree that the vb gives many pricier higher end iems a good run for the money, with no glaring noticeable flaw in their sound. i have fitted sony silicon tips on them (not the hybrid tips) and the bass tightens up a bit without affecting anything else much.

can anyone compare this to the ie8? as in how the bass, mids and treble compare? and what about the isolation?

cheers

When i tested the ie8, it sounds quite veiled. The hippo vb has a very dimensional soundstage and sounds airy and uncompressed.

Am I really listening to the same earphones ? They have horrible sibilance with the Ipod 6G and even out of my BlackBerry 8330. Maybe I got a defective pair ?

Do any of you have the sibilance problem. Its there in many tracks.

Do you have pictures of your earphones? Maybe you didn't get a good fit. Mine hardly sounds sibilant.

Will post pics soon. But the seal is great. I used them while traveling by train and its the best isolating IEM I have ever used. (Granted the RE1 and PL-30 are pretty weak in isolation).

Also please mention your source, which of the 3 ports you attached and the tips used.

Thanks.

hey guys.. any comparisons of the Hippo VB vs the RE-0?

I think they both fall in the same price bucket.

I'm using it with my nokia 5800 most of the time. Sometimes with the iaudio m3. I'm using the middle port and sony medium silicone tips.

The IE8 are rather similar, but with more refined treble and somewhat less bass quantity. VB could be described as a bit more "forward" and the IE8 as more "polite" sounding, if that makes any sense.

Isolation is not great on both of them. I'm using the thick, smooth Super.Fi silicon tips on the VB, which improves things a bit. The IE8 have very short nozzles, so they can't go deep into the ear canals and give really good isolation.

You might have to give them some time to settle down, or "burn in", as the cool kids say. I have about 70 hours on mine, and while the treble can be a slight bit harsh at times, it rarely ever is truly sibilant, except on badly mastered tracks.

I'm usually one that's EQing the hell out of any phone, but I find the VB to sound best flat out of any player. If I use them with the same EQ/BBE settings on my Cowons or Rockboxed Clips as I use for the UE11 or RE0, they indeed tend to sound sibilant.

Thanks for all your responses. These have around 40 hours of burn in with pink noise. Maybe I will try a bit more intensive burn in for another 40 hours.

The thing is Uncle Wilson from Jaben gave this to me free of cost along a Govibe DAC so I really want these to sound decent so that I can write a review to promote this earphone in India.

Ouch, hope you didn't damage your phones with that artificial stress signal. Pink noise doesn't really do anything good for phones, I've found that out the hard way.

brendon, I would be highly interested in your review.

I'm currently undecided between headdirect RE-0 and the VB in India. I tried to contact the indian distributor, but could get no info on price.

Does anyone here have a Klipsch Image S4 to compare with Hippo VB? I was decided to go with Klipsch but after dfkt's review, I don't know what to do, AGAIN.

They are two rather different earphones. The RE0 are more for trebble and details while the VB has more quantity of bass. Also the VBs are more very easy to drive and dont require an amp while the RE0s really need an amp to get the best out of them. My friend has ordered a RE0 and hopefully he will get it next week. I am dying to see how it compares to my RE1.

On dkfts advice I will stop burning in with pink noise and use regular music only. Let me see if that helps. I have tried the VB today for an hour and the sibilance is far less on the Amp3 Pro 2 and sounds much better. Lets see how much better it gets (if at all) after a couple hours of additional burn-in.

@torresfelipe - Frustrating isn't it ? Thats what head-fi does to you ! The problem is everybody's ears are different and we each perceive audio differently. Where do you live ? I am sure there must be some store where you can try out at least the Klipsh S4. I doubt you will find a store demoing the RE0s but you might find the Klipsh available for demo.

hey brendon i am from hyderabad, when you post the review do a detailed one considering many instruments and singers, indian instruments are in a different class, i donot think the tabla, sitar, santoor are in mids. i canot just take that when mids are good these sound beautiful.

DFKT,

i think if you can please also post in the review's, the goodness of the phones with various instruments, people will be intrested in knowing how is the bass attack, guitar strum etc.
