New set of cans to replace Sennheiser HD 595's

Hey guys,

After the advice from Head Fi and other forum sites i purchased my first decent pair of cans. The Sennheiser HD 595's have served me well but i would like to upgrade and try something better.

here's the Budget $400-$500 AUD
I don't have a headphone amp atm because i don't know how to connect one to a pc as the pc will be using this headphones nothing else.

So should i go for a set of closed headphones or open? they will mainly be used for gaming/Music/Movies...

I'm thinking of getting a sound card so i don't have to use one of those 3.5 adapters to convert the big jack to little... as it's so dam sensitive and i break one every month because it's flimsy plastic cheap ****.

So what would you guys suggest?

Cheers curkz

If you liked the Sennheiser sound, you might consider upgrading to the HD600 or HD650.

Also, read some reviews on higher end headphones. Find one that can relate to your needs and go for it.

Hooking an amp and/or DAC to your PC is pretty straightforward.

(You plug the amp into the line out jack of your PC. If it hasn't got one, use the headphone jack. Or you plug it into line out from a DAC, which plugs into USB and replaces your sound card with a better one.)

Don't buy a sound card to get a 1/4" plug. Either buy a DAC, which replaces your sound card at much higher quality, or get a good adapter. Grado makes a 1/8" to 1/4" cable that works well and won't break. If I remember right, it's $15 or so.

Your computer setup should eventually look something like this

Computer -> Sound Card (Provided its a decent one with decent amping on it) -> Headphones
Computer -> Sound Card (Line Out, not headphone jack) -> Amp -> Headphones
Computer -> USB DAC (essentially a sound card) -> Amp -> Headphones

You're probably going to want to upgrade your source at least assuming you dont currently have a nice sound card, i'd say it'd be a worthwhile investment to grab a nice sound card before some better cans . It'll make a world of difference (imo)

HD 595 is a very good headphone already. It is better to look for a headphone that is better than it. I suggest you to consider its best brother, HD 650. It's one of the best headphone in all of the headphones ever made.

Go for it cos you will definitely love it!

HD 600 and 650's WILL NEED A GOOD AMP! they will sound hardly any better than your 595's from a standard headphone jack, let alone $400 better.

honestly though, upgrade your source before your phones. the 595's are good phones, and its proably your source thats letting you down. something like an iBasso D2/D3 would be a good choice, or a corda 3move.
i really liked my E-MU 0202 i got for £50 (before it broke that is, second hand from a school) so they might be worth a look for a decent DAC/AMP. they are all USB DAC's, plug and play.

if your using the standard headphone just of your computer that is probably your weakest link, not the phones. i have ultrasone 780's and an iBasso D10 DAC/AMP and it sounds very good. i cant listen to the standard headphone out on the laptop anymore because it sounds so poor in comparason. makes me feel sick lol.

also make sure your music is imported in atleast 256 AAC/MP3 because your headphones will reveal flaws in anything less than that.

Thanks for the fast replies guys, i agree that i think it's my pc output letting these cans down. What options do i have ? Does anyone have any particular recommendations for a amp to hook up to my pc?

I'll see how i go with the headphone amp and the quality of sound after that upgrade. Still might go for the 650's later..

oh btw is there any way possible to remove the dust from the foam headphone covers? I can't get rid of it all!

Cheers Brenton

The E-MU 0202 looks affordable and nice i can't find any aus suppliers for these decent headphone amps without being ripped off heaps... so i may use a US forwarding agent to get the amps..
