Some Advise on SQ

Hi all, my first post here at Head-fi.

I am an audiophile who recently just got a new device that give me access to portable music. (after what seems like a century)

Although I'm new to headphones, I'm no stranger to home theater set ups. Being quite picky on pretty much everything, I want to see what you guys have for advise for me.

The type of music I listen to is quite broad. Pretty much everything short of rap and techno. Currently, i'm using some phones from my dad that is (literally) 20 years old. yuck.

In terms of budget, I think I would be willing to shell out something like 100 - 150. I would like something entry, maybe intermediate level.

What I am looking for in terms of the "feel" of the sound: Basically, the way i go with selecting my sound emitting devices is that when i am listening to the it I would like them to deliver the feeling that the composer is trying to deliver. So if something is in a major key, i'd like them to be able to pass on the majesty. or if the tune is in a minor key, i'd like them to give the feeling of melancholy.

I've narrowed it down to the following brands: UE, Westone, Klipsch, or shure

I did some research and the following models interest me.

UE: Superfi or metrofi

These first attracted me because of the aesthetics. the small size attract attention but doesn't seem like it is flaunting it.

Questions: what is the difference between the two phones in terms of SQ? Basically, i'm wondering if it is worth spending that much more for the superfi?

Westone: UM1 and 2, considering (not likely) 3

These attracted my attention due to its great reviews. the functionality of every piece really shows the dedication of engineers that put their time into making these.

Questions: again, what is the difference? is it worth the 100 extra dollars to upgrade to UM2?

Klipsch and Shure:

The unique look of the IEMs was reason for my attention.

Not too many questions on these as i do not have much information on these companies (not enough research...my bad). However, a general question would be: How do these compare to the other brands?

Thanks you for your help

Have you considered RE0? They seem just the right thing for you, especially since you are not listening to bass heavy genres.

Oh right, forgot to include that i'm definitely open for suggestions.

No I have not considered the RE0. Does it require an amp to be effective?

I can't speak much about the other brands you mentioned, but I found the UE's to be uncomfortable to wear and wasn't particularly impressed by their sound.

No, it does not, although it definitely scales up well with one.

I actually went out after seeing these and tried out the Senn CX400 and the Denon AH-C551.

I gotta say, quite impressed with these. the SQ is not too bad. not to mention, cheaper!

can any1 give me a comparison between these phones and the RE0/superfi?

Depends on which super.fi. Between the CX400/Super.Fi3 ad RE0 there's just no contest. The SuperFi3/CX400 aren't even the best in their price range, so they are easily bested by something that is a great buy at $99. Unless all you're looking for is bass quantity.

I thought you are looking for detailed sound, and bass is not that important for you. Considering you liked CX400, RE0 might not fit you after all.
