Grado SR-80i VS. Grado SR-125i - Page 2

cruizin, it seems from ur posts u r more inclined towards bass. whether a lot or more 'controlled', or both, i dont know. there is big difference believe me. but if 'a lot' , u r looking at the wrong headphones completely. u should open up to maybe denon 1001 or sony xb 500/700 too. one thing u can do is email grado and tell them u wanna know a retail location near you where u can hear the headphones for yourself. i was given a list of places by grado but couldn't go due to time constraints at that time.

I have to disagree with this. I upgraded from the SR-80 to the MS-1i, and while the MS-1i is a bit tamer, it is still a Grado -- no where near a Sennheiser! They are fun and dynamic -- just not ear bleeders!

I also disagree. I think the MS-1's are a phenomenal value... less highs, more bass. I just think the sound is more balanced than the the regular lower-end prestige phones.

You get 1/10 of one 1981 Pontiac Lemans.

wow! i didn't even think of that, i just checked Grado's website and found a dealer near me.

i contacted an audio store close to where i live and they have only one Grado headphone left and it is the Grado sr-125 (NOT the sr-125i) and he'll sell it for $125

so NEW question!

what is the difference between the SR-125 and SR-125i

and how does the plain SR-125 compare with the SR-80i

what does the "i" mean in the model numbers?
People debate whether or not there is a difference between the i versions (i means "improved", they improved all models this year). Absolute differences are the "mushroom" style cups and, if memory serves, the SR125i also have a thicker cable (8-conductor). However, Grados already have very good cables, and I might even prefer the non-i cable for its flexibility.

I would take a pair of SR125 over the SR80i if I were you.

Ive noticed the sr60i has better bass than the sr60.. maybe a bit smoother sounding too from a quick comparison... So the "i" versions might be worth getting over the old ones

For every person that can hear a difference between the original and an new 'i' model, there's another that can't.

A 125 or MS1 is still going to be better than an 80 - 'i's or not.

I always thought the general consensus was that the SR-125 isn't worth its money. The MS-1 uses the same drivers but is cheaper to begin with. Secondly, the SR-225 is considered to be the sweet spot by many.
Hate to disagree - but I have always enjoyed the 125's and find them much better than the 80's. I even prefer the 125's to the 225's. The MSI's use 125 drivers.

I believe the OP meant "laymans" - although I did drive a Pontiac LeMans and it had it's own unique sound signature.

So back to the OPs question... Has anyone actually compared the sr60i and the sr80i?
I bought 80i, i have the 60i and wanted to see if they were worth the upgrade..they are.
I have now sold the 60i, the differences are small but noticable, the 60i has MORE bass than the 80i, it isnt accurate though and invades the other ranges a bit.
The bass on the 80i is much tighter and cleaner. The mids are a little more forward on the 80i and the treble is cleaner due to the more controlled bass.
Overall worth the extra dough.

Astroid,
When you did the comparison, were the 80is already burned in?
