There's nothing wrong with rating music, it gives us something to discuss. It only goes overboard when people confuse personal opinion, or even consensus opinion, with objective fact, which happens often. Rating music in terms of quality is always subjective.

Human beings rate EVERYTHING. And it's fun to do especially for things you care about.
Ratings of music specifically. for me is also a great way to look at music i might have ignored otherwise and has lead to some of my favorite music (arcade fire)
There have been a few misses too (Opeth, I was good withe the music but lost it with the cookie monster vocals) but even then that lead to a band (immortal) that I'm starting to enjoy

I know I have rated music before, but then I started questioning why. I find it all a waste of time. Yea, people can have a change in priorities I guess. Nothing is ever static.

There is a need to rate music, but not to the extremes that some do. If you said that, I'd totally be with you.

You can still rate music. That is the definition of an opinion. I refuse to believe that you listen to all music equally and never think "I like that album more than that other one."

rating music is not a waste of time. if you have no music preference that means you listen to all kinds of music or any kind means regardless they are crap or not.

The trouble is when people start externalizing their preferences. Something may be the best band for one person, but when they try to label it or justify it as 'better' music than somebody else's favorite band trouble arises and the externalizer just looks stupid.
