Ofcourse X is better than Y and all albums are different in one way or another.

There was a time I also didnt understand one bit of the ''what are you listening to now'' thread. Its just a means of expressing yourself. Either read or unread

Rating is one of the more fun ways to discuss music................if there was no such thing as rating (aka an opinion) then we wouldn't discuss it, we'd all just listen to it............and there'd be no point for this message board...........

When you say I like "Band X" you are giving a rating........when you say I like "Band X" more than "Band Y" you are making a direct comparison............theyre slightly different but I see what you're saying and if it bothers you, my apologies...I rate / compare everything not just music....just a part of my personality

Typical thinking of young people, but yes: some music is better than others; some musicians are better than others; and some records are better produced than others.

I think the public schools encourage this type of thinking, ie: nothing is better or worse than another, just different.

Some musicians are better(more skilled, more creative) than others, yes. Some music is better than some other music, but this can't be applied universally. Any time that an artist creatively produces something new that can be enjoyed by people neither you nor anybody else has the right to call it 'better' or 'worse', even if you have a majority opinion on your side. Because that's just what it would be, an opinion. And yes, some records are definitely better produced than others. On that note, if you go into listening to something with an open mind, you can come to like it, unless the artist didn't create it for that purpose.

And personally, I wouldn't want to live in the boring kind of world where everything can be ranked definitively.

Sorry, chud's got your number, as evidenced by post 3.

I listen to music more than rate it by far, but to say that all music is just different and nothing is better than anything else is silly to say the least. Most mainstream music is absolute garbage, and I know this for a fact. In ten years nobody will care anything about most of these bands, because their music is simple, forgettable, and uninspired.

I know I have rated music before, but then I started questioning why. I find it all a waste of time. Yea, people can have a change in priorities I guess. Nothing is ever static.
