an opinion about this site from another....

oriented towards ipods. I found it entertaining, not intended to start an argument......

"To really get anything out of head-fi, you've got to spend a few days searching and reading and reading and reading until you actually have a complete grasp of most of the posters talking about what it is you are interested in. The most cogent regulars over there are still, at some level, a bunch of snake handlers.

When you see somebody straight up telling you these headphones have continued to improve not after 100 hours of use, but 3000 hours of use, and that paying some guy $500 to recable them with "oxygen free copper" (no such thing) or silver and boy that really opened up the mids, you've got to just step away and realise there is gold in them thar hills, but it's buried admist a huge pile of excrement and without careful excavation you won't know which is which."

I believe there's some truth. If you're a newbie, it's gonna take awhile to find out what you're personally looking for audio-wise, to grasp the meanings of concepts/terms like treble, soundstage, etc., and to find legitimate opinions on equipment that may properly suit/interest you.

Hey man, its implying, we need to be accurate here.

Some of it may be truth (I dunno 3000 hours is how many days, but my forgetful mind would for sure have forgotten the first virgin sound of a particular setup after 3000 hours of playback), but I thought the stock vs silver cable really will give a different sound sig???????????????????? At least it did for me, even when it was a short interconnect.

I have a similar opinion of any form of "audiophile". When one becomes more impressed with HOW their music sounds and than their actual MUSIC, they have lost sight of their hobby and will likely spend even more money chasing that last 10%, like any hobby.

That said, considering the nature of audio, I find this site to be amazingly helpful and informative. Audio is 99.99% subjective and while one person can notice a difference in dynamic driver burn in at every 50 hour interval, another will never notice a difference after a 1000 hours, its not because the former person is insane it is because the latter person does not hear things the same as the former, like everyone else. Also what one person thinks sounds amazing for a genre of music, another thinks the opposite. That is why I am always surprised when the majority of posts on this forum present both sides to almost ever pro and con and list WHY they think something sounds good and not just "OMFGZ itz the Jesus headphone!!11!!1".

There is a fair amount of spurious information floating around. The benefit of this site is in the size of the community and active forum members that have their head on straight, and dedicate a fair amount of time to keeping on top of threads that get out of hand with bogus info or pure conjuncture. We also benefit from the fact that while opinions may be worthless, when you get enough hot air flowing in one direction, worthwhile patterns tend to develop.

That is not what I meant. To make the music you like sound better so you can enjoy the music more is great. I have a problem when people listen to their equipment and, rather than enjoy the actual piece of music, they enjoy how it sounds from the said equipment.

Music is about emotion, artistry, and wonder. It is not about how well that cello sounds with those new custom cables or how the highs are just perfectly balanced between harsh and rolled off. If you pick apart a piece of art then you aren't truly experiencing art, only pieces of it and not the art as a whole, this is not the intended purpose for any art much less music.

I do agree with you, I think the best player is when you listen to the music you forget you are playing through the audio rigs.
