You have just entered a very murky area - computer audio. Its about a lot more than plugging a DAC/amp into the USB port on your netbook : you should read anything you can find on the topic - here are a few search terms to get you started (they will lead to other areas of expertise):

- FLAC vs lossless
- Winamp
- dbPoweramp
- foobar2000
- EAC (Exact Audio Copy)
- bit-perfect audio
- jitter
- USB vs optical
- iBasso D10
- computer audio

Once you have sorted through that lot, along with the claims and counter claims, you should be in a position to come back and tell us whether a netbook can compete with a Cowon in terms of SQ. The other question is what it will cost you to bring your netbook up to that standard.

Its quite a lot for me to work on. A quick view on various articles was easy enough to understand that SQ from a high quality DAP cannot be compared with that from a laptop/desktop or any cellphone.

Desktops/Laptops with expensive sound cards are able to produce eminent SQ. Using them without such cards is like using a cellphone for listening to FLAC.

IMO, I've decided to head for D2+ 16GB and next month will be taking a netbook.

Hope D2+ is great as D2 was.

How good is the S9's video support? Does it support most .mpg and .avi formats?

S9 doesn't plays .mpg, it does plays .avi encoded with xvid.

S9 is a decent player sure. drag and drop, good sound, nice screen. the touch shouldn't be considered if you are not interested in sync software.

you can wirelessly transfer content, but it takes a long time. that is done similarly to drag and drop. soundwise, it is great, but dear me, you cannot do what you want without a few hoops.

I think Archos 5 is close to what you are looking for and it's has great soundquality.
