iBasso D10 Modifications

Thread Starter
Hello!

This thread is a spin-off from a similar post initiated by D10 users in regards to the flexibility of the unit in regards to rolling op-amps/buffers.

My goal for this thread is to discuss any/all alternative modifications for the D10. As with most people, I spent about $300 on this device, and the idea of spending $60 for a topkit of op-amps doesn't kill me, nor does a $40 kimber usb cable. that being said, i want to know all the other tweaks and benefits that I can pull out of this device! At this point, it does not even matter if cumulative mods are in excess of the OEM price of purchase...just that the overall performance rivals that of severely "overwhelming" products!

Below is a list of modification categories that seem to demonstrate a noticeable and cost-effective gain in performance for the D10:

- rolled op-amp/buffers
- alternative capacitors
- alternative cables
- alternative software....e.g. media players/drivers

has anyone tried mods related to the following:

- battery swap
- terminal/connector swap
- application of contact enhancer (to connectors and/or op-amp/buffer pins)
- volume pot swap
- DAC swap

the previous post is intended to guide people towards a comprehensive and illustrious description of what users have definitely and potentially (respectively) achieved with the D10!!

Feel free to add your input, but please, reserve this space for knowledgeable observations/results and save any speculation for the main category!!

The opamps rolling is a default feature in D10, and IMHO, it cannot to be considered as modification.

I agree with try it out and let everybody know. Why a new thread? I got the topkits and just purchased the BG caps.

I wouldn't mind having a separate shorter thread to just discuss the most popular mods for D10. The D10 Appreciation Thread is a beast now and I just can't squeeze in the time to go through it all to pick out the mod posts. I pretty much gave up at page 56 (commute 3 hours a day, work full-time, have a new baby, and take classes at night for my masters so please save the lazy posts).

I have the TLE2141-BCA op amp with TLE8102 buffers in my D10 and have been VERY happy with the upgraded sound they have provided with my IE8. I am also interested in any additional mods than can further improve D10.

hi guys,
what's the software mod?

lol, why the animosity recephasan?? could it be because you are stuck with a D1?? in a forum that is flooded with 'what earbud for ipod' posts on an almost daily basis, this thread is quite useful and constructive IMO. the D10 is indeed massive and does not need to be clogged up further with multitude of posts relating to the mods. so for them to be consolidated here in the one place is a great idea IMO (hehe I was one that prompted the OP to do it, so blame me if you think its a bad idea ). not that I can realistically take mine any further, being that I have replaced the power rail and coupling caps (blackgate mod) run a multitude of different opamps depending on which headphones i'm using, including but not exclusively, the original AD743/AD8616 (non class A) topkit, the latest TLE2141-BCA/EL8201 class A topkit and as of today, i'm running the brand spankas Ti OPA1611 (x2)/EL8201. I use an upgraded USB (SCSCAg silver) cable and SCSCAg silver twinax for coax, deoxit progold on the opamp pins and sockets, thinking of swapping out the HP out jack for a silver switchcraft model (the L/O is a special switching one that i'm not sure switchcraft make an equivalent of (but I will have a lok I will likely replace the coax jack with one from vampire if it fits

i'm not sure other than a digital pot whether there are any worthwhile upgrades and the battery, for the moment is just fine.

Hi Qusp, glad you dropped in. I'd be very interested in a little more detail on the items I bolded:

- How are you liking the Ti OPA1611(x2)/EL8201 compared to the TLE2141-BCA with your JH13?

- Since this is a new thread regarding the D10 mods, do you mind giving a little more info on the blackgate mod, such as how it influenced sound and how much in general it would cost for the parts as well as how labor intensive it is?

- I'm really glad you brought up your upgraded USB cable. I have really started to wonder about this lately since a standard USB cable just seems so different from my SPC LOD and all the other cables people use around here. Was this a pretty noticeable change in SQ? Mind posting a link to a cable like yours? The USB cable Ibasso sent with my D10 is definitely a standard one right (sure seems like it is)?

Hope your well,

edit: ah I guess you updated it after I mentioned it

well I havent made a direct comparison yet and only have about 1-2 hrs head-time on the 1611, but so far i'm really loving the sound with JH13, zero hiss, LARGE soundstage and very good detail. more analogue sounding than the topkit combo, which is fairly typical of burr brown opamps. but yeah I havent doe any direct comparison yet, I will do that in the next couple of days. i'm certainly not finding it lacking coming from the topkit and it does do some things better (soundstage depth/width in particular), that I could hear immediately. whether the overall sound is preferable, I will have to see.

well the blackgate mod really just add a little more weight and authority to the SQ, doesnt also a touch more speed to these ears. parts depend on which blackgates you get. I used the NXHQ type (2 x 470uf, 2 x 220uf and 2 x .47uf), which is their top range. so the cost including a couple of little .47 bypass caps is around 50-55USD. how labor intensve it is really depends on your skill level and confidence. I would not recommend a beginner DIYer attack their D10 with a soldering iron and beware of the sensitive components on the underside of the board if you do. you must also move the components around a little to fit them in the case, which must be turned upside-down and some ridges filed down to enable it to be slid on and off for other changes if necessary.

an anti-static wristband/grounding stap is a must

I made mine, cables are my main business, so I really cant comment further on the sound of my cable in this thread. My cable is pretty over the top, so I wouldnt recommend getting a cable such as mine solely for the D10, I made it for my home rig and to see how far I could take a USB cable. PM me if you want to talk further as I cant really talk about it here.

Which cap did you bypass with .47uf BG? I replace the red wima caps with .47uf bg cap.. pics will be nice too
post #15 of 35
The 470uf caps would be the best to bypass with the .47. The 220uf with a .22. You want to work in multiples of 10 when bypassing for best response.
