Either/Or has "Say Yes" and "Between The Bars" so it's a no-brainer for me.

But almost everything he did was amazing, really.

Coincidentally, I've been jonesing these past couple of days for something that satisfies and affects me like Elliott's music does. Listening to his songs make me miss him even more What a brilliant musician.

You zeroed in on my 2 favorite tracks on that album......but I am confident when I say there is not a single song on Either Or or XO which I dont like.........

I voted for XO which I think is a more polished effort, not necessarily better, but the songwriting seems a little bit more advanced harmonically, though Figure 8 is definitely his most advanced, maybe From A Basement On The Hill too.....

I really think that Elliott was the finest singer songwriter of all time.....I don't usually make a claim about a modern day performer and equate them with the classics like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen..........he doesn't really fit in that bunch, but I think his best works equals in every possible way the best work of any of the geniuses I just named...........in addition to this, Elliott is a melodic genius on the level of McCartney / Wilson and you can definitely hear the influence there.

i voted for XO, was listening to new moon earlier and from a basement is astounding!

i would recommend jon auer's "songs from the year of our demise" and a.c. newman's "the slow wonder" for brilliant songwriting.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm a big fan of The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema and heard a few solo albums by the members, but haven't gotten across to hearing Newman's debut yet. I did listen to his last album, but it didn't satisfy. Will try out that Jon Auer album though.

Other recommendations I've gotten were albums by Arab Strap, Great Lake Swimmers and Sparklehorse... So I'll be listening to those too.

Oh and I forgot to say that as much as I love Elliott, I'm not so much a fan of Roman Candle.

yeah "get guilty" didn't blow me away either - but his solo debut drops my jaw more than any new pornographers (or other members') stuff.

Hmmm...

Either/Or... Xo...

I'll go with Either/Or.

For me, its all about Waltz # 2. This song is sheer genius. So ill have to go with XO

Oh, and fuseboxxx, if youre gonna check out Sparklehorse, I highly recommend starting with Dreamt For Light Years In the Belly of a Mountain. Brilliant album.

I remember I met this guy who felt all knowledgable in music, and he was raving about the then "new" Damien Rice album...I asked how he felt Rics compared to Elliot Smith and Nick Drake and he was like "WHO??". Needless to say, I never spoke to him again.

Elliot Smith is a great Head-Fi mascot because his body of work really synergizes well with headphones. And not only does the highly personal content cater to solo listening, but, the haunting multi tracked voices, the emotive guitar playing, all of it, it really does scale well w/ decent equipment-- pure studio albums with intimate singer-songwriter edges-- it really doesn't get much better for cans.

XO gets my vote. There's just something about that album that makes me feel good.

I can't believe I was the first one to vote self titled. It's flawless.

Also, Mic City Sons is seriously up there with Elliott's best. I know it doesn't necessarily fit, but it basically is an Elliott record, and it needs to be appreciated more than it is.
