HiFiMAN HM-801 Player Firmware Debug Thread - Page 4

My 801 takes 2-3 minutes to boot up. Every time I turn it on it has a little updating animation that runs for 2-3 minutes.
I am using a 32 GB SD card with all of the songs in one folder.
It is kind of a pain to have to wait so long for music everytime I turn it on....even though the music sounds great once it starts playing.

Edit: My card had to much on it. I reduced it from 29 to 24 GB and now it boots up in under 10 seconds.

Yeah that is annoying. And apparently 'normal'

Likewise, on mine I cannout use the Artist or Album section. The player starts scanning and then says No File Found whenever I try to do that. I have mostly FLACs but some MP3s as well and it cannot read tags on any of it

I was afraid it was normal. Maybe I will just have to listen more so I don't have to turn it off and on as often

It would be nice if the firmware only forced a content update when it recognizes an altered state from the card - like Cowon players in order to save boot time under normal circumstance.

x2

Actually I think it may do that. I just turned it on today and it went straight to the main menu, without any scanning.

I think anytime you connect to the DAC EXC or take the SD Card out, it does the updating whether or not you did any actual modifying of the contents.

I've now tried everything I can.

Oh, and yes, it makes a rather loud pop/crackle when I plug something in. And makes the most unusual electronic noise when I try to operate the device. Almost every action makes a different kind of noise.

Well, mine's going back it seems

Another annoyance is that the 801 does not remember anything from a previous listening session. It does not return to the last song played, it does not remember what songs were just played in shuffle play so I often hear the same song the next day. And it has to update the SD card everytime I turn it on which takes 3 minutes or more. These all seem like things that could be fixed considering it has onboard memory where it could store the recent activity.

Hopefully these features will be included in future updates.

The back arrow should really go back to the album view, not all the way back to the main view

It does seem that the random play mode has favorite songs that come up much more often than other songs. I have about 1200 songs all in one folder on my SD card, and I always listen in random mode as I like to be surprised by what comes on next. But in about 12-15 hours of listening during the first week of ownership, there are certain songs that I have heard 4-5 times now and several others that have come on 2-3 times. So it seems that there is something not quite random about random playback.

I could listen to the songs in order instead except that the 801 does not remember what I listened to last, so I would have to remember what song was last played and scroll down my list until I get to it. That will not work either.

Well actually.. random does mean that sometimes some songs come on more times then others..

The longest single color streak in roulette was 27 times on black in vegas... its random, but.. random goes either way

When you have a folder on a SDHC I cannot navigate backwards and forward through the tracks without having to go out into the folder / album view list. Files names are formattet like this #Number - Name of track.

But red and black are 50/50. For the same song that is one out of 1200 to show up five times in perhaps 200 tries boggles the mind. And more than a dozen songs have shown up several times.
