Denon AH-D2000 SXC Recable

I had a pair of Lawton Audio modded D2000s headphones and I wanted to go all the way. So I purchased wooden cups from Lawton Audio and some 22 AWG SXC wire & sleeving and from ALO (plus a nice Furutech plug). Ken was very helpful working me through my first re-cabling experience.

I am very happy with the results. The wire itself looks top quality and worth the cost. Sound wise, I was only expecting a subtle difference, but they immediately seemed brighter when I tried them out. So much so that I ended up tweaking the EQ a bit.

Note that it was months before I could audition the new phones (due to numerous delays on my project) and that I changed both the wire and the cups. So even if the improved sound quality is "all in my head" I am confident there are no weak links between the amp and drivers and getting the best I can from them.

Thanks Ken.

Ross,

Very cool. Some folks would equate brighter with a bad connotation, however in your case I am assuming this is a good attribute for the cans? I am thrilled it worked out for you, its not such a easy undertaking doing a rewire, especially the first time so congrats! You know people will be asking for photos

There seemed to be a slight boost in the high end, which did result in some female vocals sounding too sibilant or unnatural. Indeed this would not be a good thing if I didn't have an EQ to even things out - but this is essential to get good sound from any headphone IMHO and something I need work on a little more.

Anyway the end result is the sound changed slightly and I will assume it can only be for the better!

Ross, the Denon headphones start life as bright and boomy. It takes about 450 hours for them to settle. Then when you re-cable them it will take about another 100 hours for the cable to settle as well. So up to 550 hours if you do them separately or 450 hours if done concurrently.

How about posting some pictures? What gauge cable did you use? How long was the re-cable?

Cheers.

Once I finish getting my portable rig together I will be looking into exactly this mod. Pics are a must!

Alright, here's a photo. The cable doesn't look terribly special from the outside, it's not a work of art like some of posts here. On the otherhand, it doesn't look obviously home-made so I consider the project a success.

If I was doing it again I'd spend more time with the sleeving. I got some nylon sleeving and while it looks nice it feels like plastic to the touch, I'd prefer more of a cloth like texture. It's also a little too stiff and microphonic for my tastes. The nylon is not all bad though, it's very light and seems quite durable.

Phones were boken in prior to cable & cup mod. So I had many hours of listening as a reference (although maybe not be 450). And yes, I found them noticibly harsh out of the box.

The full cable is 8 feet long. I used the 22 AWG SXC silver coated copper cable from ALO and I ran four lengths of it from the plug.
