The thing is, beyers have one of those signatures that either you love them or you don't. I feel that most people who have tried beyers and do not like them at all either tried the dt770/80 or an unamped beyer. If you were to have the right equipment and either a dt880/600 or dt990/600, i'm sure one of them will be acceptable. While it might not be your favorite phone, you have to admit that they are very well made and do have good qualities about them.
Some may say that the bass is too overwhelming on beyers. I would have to say that yes they do pump out a lot of bass. However, if you were to try a properly amped dt990/600, I would say that the bass is very very well done. Good impact, doesn't overwhelm the other sounds, and reaches quite low.
Nowhere does it say that modified headphones are the best bang for the buck. Usually they will just improve on the original design. I personally have never tried them but would love to give them a listen. I have always wanted one due to the aesthetics of them and the "improvement" over the originals. Value-wise, I'm sure the HD800 would be arguably better than a deep cup. However, everybody can get a HD800, but not everybody will have a deep cup darth with that particular grain of wood etc etc. If the beyer signature is your thing, then I would say the beyers are a nice toy to have. However, if it's your only can, i would suggest looking at other things before you decide to get a darth.
