My quest for more BASS... - Page 2

I have the Sony MDR-CD3000 for so many years. Yes, they are very fanstastic sounding headphones, but, to my ears, they have a VERY good mid and treble. The bass is good too, but not quite boomy enough for bass head. The bass is solid, but not quite extended as far as I can hear.

Thank you.

I recently switched to the Denon AH-D5000's from the AKG K701 for exactly the same reason the OP speaks of--bass. Loved the clarity of the K701's, but the (to me) weak bass made them uninvolving. The Denons are probably among the bassiest headphones I've owned over the years, and feel nicely balanced to me in other areas as well. They aren't bloated, at least not to me, but are powerful and give a nice warm sound to anything you listen to.

Sounds like you've got a lot of great suggestions here, Syke, but figured I'd throw my two cents in.

Thanks for the insightful advice!
I am definitely try to demo the XB700s with a proper amp. As Eagler Driver has pointed out, it might be better off unamplified.
I might well just jump on DT770 Pro 250ohm if I ever find them... I fear the DT770 Pro 80ohm's bass wouldn't be enough.
The Denon AH-D5000 are definitely in my shopping list, just wish they are cheaper.

Finally got my XB700s... It's exactly what I am looking for on a budget. Auditioned the DT770 Pro 250, didn't impress me one bit. I can't understand why everyone's saying this phone is "the standard" for bass. Sure, lows are tight, but not hard hitting like the XB700. Tried it on 3 different amps (Novo, Corda Swing, Heed), same results.

I am glad I got the XB700s at half the price of a DT770. Great value for money, great cans for electronic music. A good compliment to my HD580.

dear syke,
the dt770 are considered the standard for bass because they CAN deliver bass when needed, like no other headphone in the 700$ price range. even the higher priced phones just sound different to the dt770 basswise.

the dt770 have lots of character. they are not analytical. every dt770 owned will fully understand if someone just does not like them. they are like a fetish.

but if you say you do not understand why OTHERS consider it as the standard of bass you have failed your quest.

the dt770 lovers are seeking for the bass you experience when you stand next to a cello player that plays a tune so low you know that you can only hear a part of it while the rest of the sound resonates in your body and can not be processed by your ears.

we are seeking for the sound of 10k$ loudspeaker WITHOUT SUBWOOFER that play back minimal techno with such deep bass and hights you can not believe they come from the same source at the same time.

of course we fail our quest every time when we try out a headphone. but at least we know what we were looking for. and the dt770 is just the best thing there is everyone can afford who can afford a computer and internet.

the dt770 is like a girl thats a 7 overall. but to you she looks nicer than any 10!

from what I understand you were looking for the headphones with the best bass boost. you were looking for headphones with an "integrated equalizer" that enhances the bass spectrum.

no, i will not bring the silicon tit metaphor.^^

nontheless i am glad you finished your quest! but it was not the bass quest ;D

i wish i could show you what i am talking about.
unless you hear it, you will never believe.

Hi ipumuk,

Your comments are valid. The DT700s wasn't providing me the type of bass suited for electronic music. Like I said, they don't have to be tight or accurate, just loads of them thumping in my head.

They could be well suited for other genres, but I have already got that covered with my HD580 (with a better soundstage, highs and mids).

That said, the XB700 is definitely one to consider, if you are into electronic, trance, house, hip hop, rap, etc. It's well within the affordable price range, the comfort level is second to none and you get to play "Princess Leia" for the day.
