Old iPod Video - $70.00
Soldering Kit - $30.00
Sweet New Components - $45.00
22 oz. Bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale - $5.59
Forgetting where you left off, mis-soldering three crucial steps - Priceless

Just as a warning to other would be DIY'ers, iPods are flammable.
(I must admit that it felt good to watch the thing burn, I hate Macs...)

Of course now that my old iPod is a smoldering ruin, my new one decided to die too. I had recently installed the latest version of Rockbox on it, and after a week of great service from the software, it won't turn on at all.

Is there a way to get it to work again, or am I screwed?

Pics or ban!

And bad luck dear chap. But lesson learned the hard way eh?

Best have another bottle of that ale.

Try ebay. I got a 60GB iPod Photo for $36 (including shipping). It needed a few whacks (stuck hard drive, but for all I knew when I bought it, it could've been a bad logic board), but it works perfectly (the battery still lasts a while too). They're actually pretty easy to work on (at least 4th gens; I gave up on fixing my 2nd gen Mini), and parts are both plentiful and cheap.

Firstly I'll say I love Arrogant Bastard.

Secondly, tough luck on the ipod. Time to upgrade!

wow, having made my share of errors before I got a system down for this, i have never seen one burst into flames thats a pretty good trick. bad luck. I like the ol' arrogant bastard ale as well, it saw me through a couple of the aforementioned errors. I find a chaser of the ol' humbled fellow ale to be a good remedy.

tough luck, it is worth the effort though IMO once you get a working DIYMOD in the stable. sweep the table of charred refuse and start again

For your issue of your "ipod-with-rockbox that will not turn on":

*ensure that the ipod is not LOCKED(the switch at the top)
1. Press and hold the middle button down
2. While still holding on to the middle button, press and hold the menu button
3. Hold both buttons till your rockboxed ipod "restarts" (you will see the apple logo)

On a side note, this will happen every once in awhile, not sure why. Just solve it the same way. Hope this helped for you and your wallet

Don't feel bad. I was having a few myself years ago and smashed the needle on my cartridge. A nice little $500 mistake

At least you were taking a DIY risk which is respectable. I was just being a clumsy fool.

I wish I had some pics to post, I'll keep the camera handy next time I feel brave enough to break out the soldering gun. Thanks for the advice!

I had the fantastic luck this weekend to take a trip down to the Stone Brewery in Escondido, nothing beats a Ruination IPA straight out of the tap.
