EQ on ipod 2G

I’ ve really tried hard to answer this on my own, but I had no luck with it.

Let me introduce my thinking first…

A friend of mine wishes to upgrade his 2G ipod touch (32Gb) with a 3G 64Gb ipod touch. Well he does that all the time, and when he does we all get interested since he is too careful with his stuff.
This time I seriously consider getting this, since an ipod is a real fun-station and at 32Gb I could really store a lot of music and video to use when traveling. The Safari browser also gets my attention here.

I read that the EQ on the ipod ia inadequate? Or even non-existent?

Since I am really interested in getting a really good SQ as a priority and I don’t intend carrying all of my DAPs with me (or even keeping them in the long run), I would like someone to explain what is the problem with the EQ on this device.

In my opinion, if the SQ comes close to the X, the ipod gets my bet since its so much more versatile and fun. No need to say I will be testing it with my earphones before I part with any money…

The iPod EQ is non-customizable and has only preset choices. You might find some presets that work for you.

every year or two years, someone will 'suss out' that the ipod does have user-replaceable eq. it really takes about 2 grams of brain volume, but unless apple have changed anything recently, does not work.

it is this: open itunes, open the eq, create a preset and save it to a name which itunes utilises. then, save over the name and BAM! you have user-replaceable EQ which goes to the ipod. however, i was one of those clever (not) users who found out later that what i was hearing was placebo as when tested, there was no difference. in other words, the ipod did not get to utilise the eq.

the last time i checked this was in early 2009, but things may have changed with itunes 9 or later iterations of 8. i am queueing up a hardware test for this to once and for all lay this to rest, but... who knows when it will be done.

I really, really wonder why doesn't any developer (including apple itself) answer this tsunami of complaints about the absense af a decent EQ in the ipod.

This is such a negative publicity for them.

I think this should not be such a big trouble, since on the hardware level, the DAC supports equalization. One thing that might be getting in the way is the constant change of audio chipset within the ipod causing compatibility issues...

Very frustrating...

I have a customisable EQ in my Sony A829 but never use it. Prefer my DAP's without EQ.

I did try the EQ on my Touch, one for bass boost, but sounded like it distorted the sound whereas the Sony didn't.

the ipod's eq is based off of 0 decibels. if you EQ, you should (if there is no head room), lower the gain, then amp each frequency individuallly. the ipod eq does not work because of the gain set to 0. it is terrible!

you can replaygain or aacgain your entire library, but it would be best to do a hard back up first, then apply the settings to the backup, just in case.
