You wouldn't think it would be that hard to find an PMP with tons of storage. Storage, generally speaking, is cheap compared to years past.
It sucks but the market is moving away from hard drive based players and doing it to soon. Flash storage is way behind hard drives in space VS price but DAP makers are dropping hard drive models but also not giving us options for high capacity storage.

It is pretty silly especially with more PMP able to play HD video. This issue should iron itself out in 2 years or so when flash gets larger and cheaper but in the mean time those of us who need high capacity players are stuck with older less featured models.

I think it is a poor decision by the PMP makers but they are only catering to the light users now.

BTW, largest 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives (1TB and 2TB respectively) are not so cheap compared to a largest 1.8" (240GB), their price is also somewhere about $200-300.
I couldn't think of the correct terminology, I had just gotten to my desk and barely sipped on my coffee yet. You're reading too far into it.

The fact still remains that you have to use a specific type of drive that costs more money for less space (though in a smaller form factor). It sucks, that's all.

Well, you can connect even 3.5" ATA hard drive to your old ipod through the adapter... but i doubt anybody wants to carry such HDD (and power supply as well) in addition to their DAP.
Small long life DAP => small and power-efficient (=> low capacity and pricey) HDD.
Huge brick with zero battery life => any HDD will be ok (=> you can install cheap large capacity drive).

I ended up getting a Zune 120 mostly because I didn't have to buy a line out cable (which I would've had to do with an iPod for my headphone amp) and I got one from a local Best Buy for $180 after tax. I really like the player so far but I don't like the Zune softare on PC very well.

Stay clear of Archos, not only do they sound bad IMO, but most have the physical dimensions of a breeze block. If that wasn't bad enough, Archos have a nasty habit of extracting the urine somewhat; by expecting you to pay for additional software (plug-ins as they call them) to unlock the full potential of the device.

I once owned a 605 WiFi and Archos expected me to pay an additional £50 to unlock basic stuff like browser plug-ins, DVD plugs-ins and video plug-ins - It annoyed me so much I took it back and promised never to touch an Archos device again. At the time my Sony NWZ-A816 sounded substantially better.

Further more, its was a nightmare to navigate, had dead pixels on the screen and was generally awkward to carry without the aid of extremely deep pockets or a bag.

Perhaps things at Archos have changed lately, but I very much doubt it - As you can tell I wasn't all that impressed!!

Generally I'd advise you to avoid any Archos device like you'd avoid Bubonic plague and buy a iPod Classic which is an all-round nicer proposition !

Yeah, the HP out is good and a headphone amp improves it even more. But I agree that the software is a bit of an annoyance (although it's not any worse than iTunes, imo). I expect some good deals coming up on Black Friday, as the old legacy hardware gets cleared off the shelves.

Odd, I've got an Archos 5 and find it to sound pretty good, not quite as good as my Sony Hi-MD but close. Novigation I find to be easy, no dead pixels, but you are right; it's a brick to haul around.
