What are the BEST cans I can use on the go?!?

Alright, so I've been listening to trance and electronic music now for a while and it's become my favorite. So about...ooh...5 months ago I went on the recommendation from a friend (who knows nothing really) to get BOSE around the ear headphones.

Sound quality is pretty decent, and they are really light and comfy. But there too thin and flimsy..and I can't help but feel like there is something SO MUCH BETTER out there.

I realize people on this site are typically expierenced and could have to criticize on the fact I've settle with an ipod touch and bose headphones. But I'm sticking with my ipod cause I do love it.

So here's the question and limits:

I want to know what the best over the ear headphones (cans...I'm an epic newbie with terms...) that I can buy for portable use (my ipod)???

They must conatin the whole ear, look decent, be sturdy, comfy (weight is no issue), sound quality overall must be superb (I do like a good bass also, but not an overpowering one)...o and price nothing above $400.

Suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated, I really want some good headphones to "optimize" my music exprience

By the way, I have looked headphones by Sennheiser, Grado, Stanton, but could never come to a good decision on which company is best for my needs, opinions on them and other brands would be helpful for future buys.

I think there is consensus that the ESW10 is one of the best portable headphones out there.

k
maybe i shouldn't be skeptical but Im stubborn this way...
are they actually made with the wood finish?...cause that might be a problem. I'm a big swimmer so I'm at meet in very humid, wet, natatoriums and I have a feeling the wood wouldn't agree with the environment.

I guess that's another thing..swim meets, especially in college natatoriums are extremely loud with the people and pool...and wet. The ESW10s seem like they'd be best at home, on a bus or plane...

appreciate it though, they do seem to be damn good headphones.

the wood is sealed, I don't think it would have any problems, unless it fell in to the pool :P

That's good. So now I've got another pair of headphones to put into consideration, Sennheiser Hd555s look good, so do 205s...but they probably won't match up to the ESW10s.

Do a search on those headphones, and you'll quickly find out whether they do or not

The frequency on the ESW10s was 3-35000 vs HD215 of 7-22000 and HD438 of 5-25000. SPL both HDs were slightly higher. And yes HD215s are "DJ" headphones but I liked the rotatable cup. And 438s seem to be really user friendly, but from more stats the ESW10s seem to be better. But I'd like to look at more than just sens and the other company (forgot the name at the moment) any with other suggestions would be helpful

I use the Westone 3's when I'm out, but for working out and jogging I would recommend something cheaper like the shure se210's I use

Those numbers say very little, if anything, about how a headphone will actually sound. Look up people's reviews and impressions instead.

whiteleaf, tell me more about your bose around the ear? I was planning on getting the over the ear ones instead, but now cant decide on what to get. Similar to you, I listen to alot of electronica, and so biased towards bass. But occasionally, I want some highs as well. I almost got the sennheisers HD555, then saw that many of these so called high end cans have too long cables (3m). I'd prefer nothing more than 1.5m cable length.

You're looking for compact closed headphones, i assume. try:

Denon ah-d1001
Sennheiser HD 25-1 II
akg k81dj
ESW10

Ok so the Bose, as a new person to the headphone deal, are good, decent. But not great. Bass is good, highs are a bit better and cablei think isn't more than 1.5m. From what I hear, the HD555s are actually a bit to power hungery for portable devices but if you don't mind that and the about 80 hour break in time hen they're (from what I can tell) very good...which is kinda vague but whatever. I've enjoyed them but I just wanna upgrade. Look at HD438s or 215s (215s are under the DJ category but they work well with iPods and stuff.) problem with your cable limit is most of te pod cans I've looked at are 2m+ I'll get bak to you on anything else I find out that you might like.

I don't mind th headphones being too big, I actually like that cause the Bose are about the same size as the ESW10s and that's about as small as I'd go. I just want great quality spud and some cool looks would be a bonus. Thanks by the way everyone for the uggestions and help, it's been great in helping research an get closer to a decision. I'll let you know my final grouping i guess later on...maybe in a ew thread "top 3 choices, what to pick" or something. I'd anyone has anything else please feel free o let me know
