In any case, I can surmise that the OP is looking for something significantly less expensive than even $300, which is why I was trying to illustrate the value.
NO - you do not need the ipod touch or SB controller. Why do you keep saying that? Everything you need is $300 not $500. The touch or SB controller just adds a fancy controller it is not required by any means.

In the living room my Denon reciever has a WiFi iPod dock. It shares music files and pictures with any PC using Windows media player. In the bedroom I use a PS3. It can connect to Windows or it's own downloadable PS3 file server. I've also purchased PlayOn for $20 which allows me to stream Hulu and Youtube to the PS3.

The only thing I can conclude from this is that you are somehow unable to read.

Again no the statement you wrote makes the reader think an ipod or iphone is required. So the writer was not clear on his intentions.

The statement I wrote?

Obviously, the $300 Squeezebox WILL stream. It has a display, and comes with a basic remote, so it will technically do everything you need. Paying $200 extra for the remote gives you added creature comforts, but does not affect the sound in any way.

If the OP is looking for the cheapest way to get media from a computer to a DAC, might I recommend a long Toslink cable?

That's the way I'm doing it with my desktop computer. The computer is in the basement, and I have an 8 meter toslink cable going to a DAC in my theater room. Toslink is supposedly stable to 100 meters (330 feet).

EDIT: Monoprice has "premium" 100 foot toslink cables for $25.

It doesn't appear there is one.

media streamer, set top box.

media player client.

there are lots of terms

(I use a popcorn hour box as well as slimdevices box).

also a fanless mini-itx pc (100% noiseless, using ssd and noiseless power supply).

The squeezebox is probably the way to go, here. Sure, $500 buys you a nice laptop, or a phenomenal pair of shoes, but the laptop output is just as noisy as the computer you put in the other room, and you have to get up to change the song every time.

A media streamer with a good remote lets you access thousands of files from your chair, or the next room, or anywhere you please. The squeezebox "remote" also shows album art, playlists, etc. If you don't want this, why not just use a cd player?
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! 'Media Streamer'. Good to know.

The Squeezebox duet looks like a nice product, unless you'd like to start dloading hi-res files from the internet. Everyone keeps telling me that's the 'wave of the future'. Ok, I'll get on board, I just wish it would hurry up and get here!

I've got a Squeezebox and it's quite nice. The big advantage of it over a media center PC or netbook is that it seems to work and keep working.

I've just picked up the newer Squeezebox Duet - used, for less than the new Squeezebox was - and we'll see how that goes.

I have two Squeezebox Classics in my system and I think they are great. Anyone interested in these devices and their capabilities really should check out the Squeezebox forums at Squeezebox : Community : Forums. There is a plethora of information there to answer most of your questions. The level of helpfulness there is very high as well. I would also suggest also that you read up on the soon to be available Squeezebox Touch, if you are interested in hi-res playback and you don't want to drop $2000 US on a Transporter.

Several people on this thread have also mentioned the Apple Airport Express, and I think that is a great solution as well. It's very easy to set up, and use. The only downside I see is that you become pretty dependent on iTunes and Apple's way of doing things. I prefer FLAC for lossless compression because Apple doesn't own it. If I wanted to play lossless music through an Airport Express, I would have to transcode it and maintain two copies, or tie myself to a proprietary format (ALAC). If you are lucky enough not to notice differences between lossless and lossy compression, and you don't mind using iTunes to manage your library the Airport Express solution is a lot easier, IMO. Since the original poster mentioned hi-res, I'm not sure that is the case here.

Well, since and SB classic is limited to 16/44.1 and 24/44.1 respectively, I don't think that's the solution.

SB Touch that is forthcoming supports up to 24/96 and should be released by Dec this year.
