Optical vs. Coaxial digital encoding schemes

I haven't been able to google up any good info on this myself for some reason, so I turn to head-fi...

I'm working on a project where I want to repurpose a digital output. I have a device that has a dock with an optical out. I'd like to intercept the digital signal before it goes into the dock and route it to a coaxial jack, but I haven't been able to find any info about the encoding.

Some of my research seems to suggest that the signal is just converted to optical rather than re-encoded, so I think if I just bring the lines going into the optical jack to a coaxial jack instead I might be in business. The optical jack has only three lines going into it (I'm assuming power, ground and data).

Thought I'd ask before I try. Anyone know how this stuff works in detail?

Both are S/PDIF and you don't need to re-encode anything.

Thanks for the response.

I'll give it a shot and see if it works.
