Gumstick NiMH battery storage...

If you get a gumstick NiMH battery and don't use it at all (eg keep it as new) does the life of the battery still get reduced?

As you may know from my other thread, I'm going to be purchasing an iRiver imp-550 in the next few days.

The company I will be buying from has offered either a boostaroo, or 2 spare gumstick batteries for the player.

I think the gumstick batteries are worth more to me than the boostaroo (which I've read on these forums isn't very good to begin with.)

However I'd like to know if there is any harm in keeping them for (say) a year before using them to replace the batteries that ship with the player.

Thanks in advance for any input

Thanks Haoleb,

I was just curious because I had read some of the older threads about storing NiMH batteries and was wondering if it was a different situation if I never charge the batteries to begin with.

Cheers

I store mine in the fridge. I have yet to read how long an NH-14WM cell has for shelf life.

I'm a little late on this thread, but my reading on batteries would indicate a virgin NiMH battery would have an essentially infinite shelf life. Don't charge it until you're ready to put it into service and it should be like new when you start using it. NiCads are the same way.

Alas, the same can not be said for Li-Ion batteries. From what I've read, all current lithium-based batteries have a limited shelf life which begins on the date of manufacture. They're going to last X years no matter if you use them or not.
