iPod 3G - 'bleh' sound

Thread Starter
I went out of my way previously to get a used Ipod 5.5 after reading all about the Wolfson vs. Cirrus Logic DAC debate. I was 100% happy with my 5.5.

I finally broke down and bought the iPod touch this weekend when I read the teardown report and found it still had the Wolfson. When I got home I compared the two (using Klipsch Image x10, no amp) and generally they seemed to sound the same.

So then I used the Touch for my daily programming background music...and I kept getting this 'underwhelmed' feeling. I went home and did some more critical listening...and in fact, the Touch *is* falling short.

It seems the frequency response is about the same. But it's missing 'punch'. I listen to Boards of Canada 'Olson (Version 3)'. Those initial bass hits just come across flat on the touch. It's strange; it's subtle - far from obvious - but the music out of the Touch just isn't exciting - like its dynamic range is reduced somehow. I just don't have fun listening to it. I come away thinking 'bleh'.

I am thinking about returning and and eating the restocking fee, but I may give it one more chance if I can get a Pocketdock and some decent amp in time. Do you guys think that setup will redeeem it? I really do love the interface and size.

that is interesting. for mine i feel that it isnt lacking bass, but has more of a bass boost. what i hear is more of a treble loss.
