They are probably allowing the usb ports to only supply the minimum amount of current.

If the dac has an external power supply or integrated battery you aren't using, that may do the trick too.

Other usb devices may also be drawing current and preventing the DAC from working.

I'm going to reckon that you should go into Device Manager, and check out all the USB hubs via Properties. Perhaps there's that option checked where it says: Allow the computer to shut it down/throttle it whenever.

Yes, that is a real setting, just not in those exact words. That's the only thing I can come up with.

Problem not solved after all. Yesterday it worked fine for hours with the double plug lead but today the sound breaks down also with this lead. I have checked the Mule's suggestion and the option he mentions is indeed checked but removing it on all usb hubs makes no difference. I simply have to conclude that this particular netbook is not capable of reliably playing music via a usb dac

This may be the only way to transfer CD to your netbook. But I supposed to play mp3 on it.
