@central how does touch 2G compare to Sony x1050 in your sig?

I read a lot of BS in this thread. Wonder if the majority have touched a Touch at all.

Just got a iPod Touch 64 GB for a week now. Perfectly happy with it, detailed sound and a very good sound stage for such a device. Having owned an iRiver iFP-190T, iPod 3G, nano 1G and Shuffle 3G this iPod Touch 64 GB is my best sounding player so far.
Even standard earphones with mic do sound a tad better also. With DT880 or SE 530 and Ray Samuels Predator the Touch really sings. So much clarity and detail.

I think the OP has a bad unit, sorry for him. Wonder if he gave Apple an option to fix it.

50 million iPhones and iPod Touch devices out there.
Since 2007, it's just getting started!

Thread Starter
Just coming back to this thread after a while and from what I'm reading there does seem to be a lot of mixed opinions on the device. It's quite strange to me that the 1st Gen Touch gets such poor reviews when for me, not only did my 1G have better SQ than the 3G, but also a better screen.

The iPod touch is great all-round device. For portable internet it's one of the best, if not the best, and for games it does rather well. I have in fact returned the iPod and since sticking to the Clip. The iPod does many things really well, but for me, it wasn't doing what I really wanted it to do well (that being great sound quality).

I'm not taking sides and why should I? I've had good experiences with Apple and bad ones. I won't be buying another iPod from them until they up their audio game. Everyone who thinks they sound comparable to the likes of the X Series or the Clip clearly haven't heard the competition. They have their pro's and con's.

There's always next year!

Seems like theres some faulty units regardless of model or generation.

I have three 1gen touch's and love everyone of em'. They are just right when running through a Wadia Transport using lossless files.

The OP should really go back and try at least 2 new unit and this means in the shop.

Just to make my point a little rhetoric...
Anyone bother to ask the OP what his headphones are? What if he is using dt990 600-Ohms or something? xD

And then, why would anyone include a Wolfson dac in a device made to sound bad by design???
They don't anymore

The last time they did

I need/want a good (read better than average) high capacity DAP. Threads like this seem to create more confusion and it's difficult to audition everything. I don't have a ton of cash for a Hi-Fi Man and my priorities are SQ/capacity/value. Nano-> LOD -> Arrow HE is decent but I'm looking for a better source as listening through the Arrow from a Pioneer 58AV is considerably better but hardly portable!! It does not appear that the Touch is perceived to be any better, and perhaps not even as good as the Nano. Anyone done an extensive comparison of the Touch/Nano with a new 7th Gen iPod (as it has the highest capacity)? I've searched but come up with very cursory and often conflicting opinions.

does ipod classic 7G lineout perform better than ipod touch 3G lineout?

I hear they have same SQ. But I'm also interested if anyone has more input here?

There seems to be some confusion as far which audio chipsets Apple uses in their portable devices.

I found some info here that shows the Wolfson and Cirrus aren't the only DAC codecs in iPods/iPhones. Wolfson made the chips for the iPods until the Classic came out, which used the Cirrus. The 1st gen iPhone and iPod Touch had the Wolfson, then switched to a Samsung integrated A/V chipset for audio, no Cirrus DAC. And the latest Classic has also abandoned the Cirrus for the same Samsung integrated A/V chipset.

So unlike popular misconception, the 2nd/3rd generation iPhone/iPod Touch have NEVER used the Cirrus DAC codec, their 1st generations were still Wolfson, and it seems to be "all Samsung" moving forward.

I have gone through multiple first gens, second gens, and now 3rd gen.

First gen to second is a massive jump in SQ and 2nd to 3rd is the same.

FYI, I am using UE TF10Pro. So it may not drive dynamic as well as the BAs.

Thanks for the information and links. It's all very helpful and has me looking (at least for now) into other portable players. I like the Wolfson, BB and Cirrus chips but am not too sure about the Samsung stuff. The company is spread very thin and I really don't know how much attention they pay to SQ. Maybe they're okay but I'm going to have to give several players a serious listen before spending more money. Maybe the least expensive Nano will do until I find something better as I will always be using my Arrow amp. More capacity would be great, but not if the SQ is lacking.
